🚨 New Paper w/ @YoshikuniOno, conditionally accepted @PolBehavior 🎉 Why are elected officials often much older than voters? We use age manipulation software to uncover voters' age biases. Surprise: Voters (even older ones) like young candidates! 👦🏻👨🏻👴🏻 https://t.co/FHZkU8xNRM

At 34, Zohran Mamdani is New York's youngest mayor in over a century. Over 2 million people voted—the most since 1969—fueled in part by strong youth turnout.

John Purroy Mitchel, known as the “Boy Mayor,” was three months older than Zohran Mamdani is now when he won office in 1913.

Grateful for the opportunity to join @youthful_dem at the Tokyo District Court last Friday. While they lost the case to lower Japan’s age of candidacy to 18, their continued efforts to make politics more accessible to young people are truly inspiring.

Takaichi's cabinet is a bit younger (avg. age: 59) than Ishiba's outgoing one (avg. age: 63), though both include just three members under 50. So, at least from a youth and women's representation standpoint, it's interesting how similar the two pictures look...

As Japan's first female prime minister, Takaichi has appointed Katayama as the first female finance minister. Yet only two cabinet members are women—unchanged from Ishiba's outgoing cabinet. Not quite the "Nordic levels" of women's representation that Takaichi campaigned on...

Sanae Takaichi is set to inherit a Japan reshaped by inflation, weak growth, and political turnover.

Looks like the APSA poll had it backward—Takaichi, not Koizumi, won the leadership election to become the first female LDP president, and presumably Japan’s first female PM.
At APSA on Sept 12, the Japan Political Studies Group ran a poll on who will be the next PM. 27 scholars voted: 🥇 Koizumi Shinjiro - 14 🥈 Takaichi Sanae - 8 Others - 5 We'll see if the group got it right when the LDP picks its president (and presumably the next PM) tomorrow.

At APSA, @cmcclean and I presented a paper. In Japanese municipal assembly elections, ties sometimes occur; in such cases, the winner is determined by lottery. We show that the incumbency effects estimated from lottery elections are different from those estimated by RDD.

With Ishiba resigning, Japan is set to have its 4th new PM in 5 years. Notably, his minority coalition hasn't been unusually short by comparative standards—at 343 days so far, it's longer than the 327-day average in Europe (per our study). https://t.co/jUYEr1hBS6
