Since oil does not break down easily, it contaminates the areas affected for long periods of time. Ten years after the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, the ecosystem still has not recovered. Nearly 100% of the methane gas could have stayed in the ocean.

Overall, oil is no longer an acceptable and effective solution. The effects on the environment are too high, and the adverse effects on the planet are continually growing. There are safer and more effective energy options, and it is time we start making a change to use them.

Wind energy leaves behind no waste or residue. It is very efficient as a single turbine and will produce its own value in energy within a year. Wind energy is fairly cheap, and the price remains consistent. They can also generate revenue for urban towns and farms.

Wind energy is energy generated by airflow across large turbines. As the turbine blades spin, a generator inside is also turned. This generator will then produce electricity as it spins. That power is sent out through power lines to be used or stored.

Another clean energy option is wind energy, which uses large turbines and can either store, or send the energy through the power lines.

With new advancements in ethanol production, the amount of energy needed to produce the fuel (input) is now outweighed by the output. This is achieved through better farming techniques and new technology. It is also produced in the U.S. so there is no reliance on other countries.

Ethanol is made from biomass, such as corn, grain, sugar cane, wood chips, or crop residue which is what’s left after a harvest. It is actually already used in oil mixtures, but at varying degrees. The higher percentage of ethanol in the mixtures, the better for the environment.

Oil is becoming more energy intensive, while biofuels are the opposite. As for carbon emissions, regular biofuels can have up to 48% emission reduction in comparison to oil, and advanced biofuels can actually have negative carbon emission.

One rapidly expanding clean energy source is biofuels. Biofuel is fuel derived directly from living matter. It is considered renewable because of the quicker rate that it can be grown. The two most used biofuels today are ethanol and biodiesel.

Oil spills occur when fossil fuels are released into the environment because of human activity. Oil spills cause pollution, and damage many ecosystems such as beaches, reefs and marshlands. Sea birds, marine mammals and fish are some of the animals harmed because of oil spills.

Hydraulic Fracturing, or Fracking is harmful to the environment because it requires large amounts of water and chemicals to release the oil from rocks. It produces large amounts of wastewater which require treatment before it can be used
