lots of people i respect pointing out it comes from a particular tradition, and a particular kind of care and solidarity - fair play!

on reflection, i regret being snarky about someone else giving away their books to students; if they can do it, more power to them. who am i to snark at a Black faculty member in the US doing something generous for their students, even if it seems outside my frame of reference.

if arsenal beat forest at home they are guaranteed to be two points clear at the top after a quite frankly stupidly intense run of fixtures (which is the same for everyone), so I will take that thanks very much

like if you want to give your books away then that’s great, you do you, but why are they in your office if you’re giving them away to anyone who asks?

the great thing about having an office with bookshelves is that I have books on my shelf that I need to refer to and read and quote from and I can do that whilst sitting in my office

giving away books to students sounds great, but if I did that I would need to buy the vast majority of them again because I need them for my research and teaching

why would you store the majority of books on a shelf front cover out unless you were a bookshop

Seriously, our MSM is corrupt as fu@k ! Rachael Johnson on #bbcqt last night. Stanley Johnson on #gmb today. What other country, in the world, would think that was normal. #ToryShambles #torychaos

if arsenal win at St Mary's on the weekend they will be the only British team ever to have had a perfect record for the entirety of a Prime Minister's official term in office, and will therefore get a Gold Plated Butterhead Lettuce from the Premier League

Arteta on Saka's game time: Look at the top players in the world they play 70 matches every three days and you have to do that. If we put something different in their minds I think that would be a huge mistake.

does anyone know any good careers advisors for people with PhDs who want to switch sectors and do other work? there are lots of people out there who seem to be "life coaches" rather than people with careers advice! any tips appreciated!

he was ousted for a string of things, the most serious of which was covering up allegations of sexual assault but none of this matters for the Conservative Party, truly rancid even by its own, warped, sociopathic standards

if boris Johnson comes back, there’s basically nothing he can do that will get him ousted again - he can do whatever he wants, have a 2 year holiday while everything collapses, because they need his posh twat act to not get wiped out in a general election

would you rather (as a member of the Conservative party) have a leader who is not Boris Johnson and face constant calls for a general election, or have Boris Johnson and not have that - what a way to frame that choice

T be clear: he may not be the 1st choice of MPs (I may be wrong) but he most certainly is amongst the membership. He’s a #winner and the only MP with legitimacy having been overwhelmingly elected by the country. Without him calls for a General Election will grow. #BringBackBoris

for example, one that looks at living standards, or wage growth in real terms - like we don’t have to go Full Braudel on this, nobody should ever go Full Braudel - but it’s not exactly hidden geological secrets for gods sake

at what point do we stop using the term “unprecedented” and start building an intellectual and conceptual context that understands this as explicable and expected
