We expect our politicians to lead with compassion, not make flippant suggestions that will lead to further trauma to children. Our priority must be the best interests of kids—ensuring family unity and making every effort to keep children with their loved ones whenever possible.

Suggesting that children of detained undocumented immigrants be placed in the foster system shows a profound lack of understanding of the harms inflicted on children when they’re removed from their families and communities and placed in the U.S. child welfare system.

U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour’s swift ruling is good news. Noncitizen children face myriad challenges that can limit them from reaching their full potential. We must do everything possible to protect their rights and ensure they have the opportunities they deserve.

A federal judge says he will temporarily block Trump's executive order ending birthright citizenship, calling it "blatantly unconstitutional"

As a children’s rights organization, we applaud their swift action. Noncitizen children would face severe, irreparable harm, including constant threats of deportation and family separation, and heightened trauma. This isn’t just illegal—it’s immoral.

Yesterday the Trump administration issued an executive order declaring that future children born to undocumented immigrants no longer be recognized as citizens. In response, the @ACLU, other civil rights orgs, and 22 states have filed lawsuits, calling the order unconstitutional.

No existing legal protection, including the Flores Settlement, would prevent undocumented children from being mandatorily detained by ICE under the Laken Riley Act.

S.5. would mandate federal detention for immigrants without legal status who have been charged or arrested for minor offenses—such as shoplifting—with NO exceptions for children. That means kids could be detained indefinitely for normal childhood behavior, like taking candy.

📢 We need your help to protect the rights of children. The Laken Riley Act (S.5) is set to go before the Senate soon—and it threatens the well-being of children vulnerable to unjust detention.

The fact that migrant children had to rely on a court order to ensure basic necessities highlights a flaw in our immigration system.

@RavShmuly strikes at the heart of the urgency of this issue in his op-ed. Our commitment to children in our country isn't just a matter of legality but morality. Now is not the time to end these protections. We must extend them to ensure the well-being of migrant children.

Despite over two years under the settlement, CPB has failed to show it can meet its obligations to children without independent oversight. Children continue to be denied basic care, are often separated from their parents for days, and are housed in windowless rooms.

Last month, Flores counsel filed a motion to extend a 2022 settlement with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP). The settlement holds CBP responsible for providing the children in its care with vital necessities, yet many continue to face inhumane conditions.

She knows the stories of kids whose parents faced difficult circumstances and needed extra support to provide a safe, stable home. Instead, the system tore them away, often exposing them to even deeper harm.
