Happy Election Day, Saint Paul! Polls are open until 8:00. I voted for our Mayor, voted YES for Q1 for administrative citations & voted YES for our schools because our City, kids, and families need to be protected and prioritized NOW, not later or when it’s more convenient.

Imagine suing a State, the capital city of that state, and the largest city in that state just to lose… again because they don’t want their employees doing your job for you. City employees are not federal employees - point, blank, period.

Tenant protections are the product of years of community engagement, Council advocacy, & City partnership. Passing it now means we can spend a year focused on meaningful implementation & building in administrative citations to ensure this policy has real enforcement power.

It’s a privilege to champion the revitalization of tenant protections—a City Council priority that’s vital, and simply overdue. In 2020, Saint Paul made a promise to renters. That promise was left unfulfilled when the Council voted, 4-3, to rescind tenant protections in 2021.

UPDATED: Here's the package of tenant protections Council Member Cheniqua Johnson will propose on April 2, which is the only way she'd vote for relaxing rent control. And here's why rent control critic Anika Bowie plans to vote against that package anyway.
