Karunanidhi's greatest achievement was he didn't let India become a Bangladesh - the fight against Hindi imposition. I don't think native hindi speakers realise what an emotive subject it is in non hindi speaking regions.

@calamur I think you mean - he didn't let TN become a BD. In the sense fought over a language very hardy, fought against imposition of one, but stayed in the Indian union.

@calamur You'll be surprised to know Hindi Prachar Sabha Chennai's largest subscription. In Chennai restaurants knowing Hindi helps. DrMK cheered Hindi speaking construction labour by inviting them to a function marking completion of a project. Kollywood's after Hindi speaking heroines!

@ATHREYAG my paternal grandmother would tell me stories of how their generation was fully accepting of Hindi, and how the Hindi Prachar sabhas bloomed. till the decision to impose HIndi - and things turned. This was way before my birth

@ImNeerajG the concept of Tamil identity as the defining identity is very strong. And, politicians tap into that. So, i guess it is both.

@calamur One of the legacy of Hindi speaking leaders is that #Karunanidhi demanding separate Dravidian State of 4 southern states. TN never remain same. National party congres was thrown out completey. Hate for Hindi reached to peack. Thanks to the Hindi leadership.

@calamur And I have seen Tamilians struggle to communicate when they travel outside TN. Learning a language should be of choice, I fully agree. But learning any language is always an asset. To that extent DMK was regressive and shortsighted.

@SundarRangan I agree. It was possible not to agree to hindi imposition, at the same time as allowing people to learn hindi. It is a useful, and beautiful language to know

@calamur The whole hindi imposition is and was a sham, TN is no different when it comes to throwing monther tongue under the bus for English, same across India. You can't talk about Tamil language pride and work against it

@calamur I still hold that Hindi is just another national language like 16-18 other Indian national language. The constitution doesn't say Hindi is sole national language.

@calamur @IndianLibDem They will realize if we non-Hindi speaking Indians stop showing magnanimity and boycott Hindi from our lives. They have mistaken our magnanimity as their influence on us.
