I gave a TEDx talk on rebuilding public trust in science. I talked about how my view of science changed once I started doing #scicomm & what universities & media outlets can do together to rebuild trust. Video to come! 📸 @TEDxOshkosh image courtesy Weston Imaging Group

My first byline in @grist!!!
Good story by @madeline_heim @grist about the vast number of aging "agricultural dams" across the US and the failure risk they pose. And what can be done about it. (Remove them and turn to nature-based solutions.)

Really powerful (and terrifying) story out this morning by @caitlooby on why this hurricane season matters even for states as far north as Wisconsin:
jsonline.com
Whether its relief efforts, supply chain disruptions or economic toll, climate change is showing just how interconnected everything is.

The rumors are true: Ask me and @jessieopie anything on Reddit, *9/26 at noon! (It’s September now, not August). Looking forward to sharing info about voting, candidates, campaigns, conventions, referendum questions and more!
Here's me in a cheesehead. Please join my @journalsentinel colleague and friend @hopekarnopp + me to talk Wisconsin politics on Sept. 26!

And here is a friendly reminder that doing a wetlands story during peak mosquito season in the Northwoods is not a good idea.

New story out today on how Bayfield County foresters are working to save forested wetlands from the emerald ash borer. @journalsentinel / @Report4America
https://t.co/S7ZTFIAooE
jsonline.com
County foresters started to plant other kinds of trees – many of which were not found in the area – in the hope some could replace the ash trees.

I love Devil's Lake. You love Devil's Lake. ~2.5 million people visit it every year! I wrote about the toll that massive crowds are taking on the landscape and the staff, and people who are stepping up to help. https://t.co/rUqpQ400Er
jsonline.com
Devil's Lake State Park has always been a favorite, but visits exploded during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its popularity is a double-edged sword.

Fearing a catastrophic oil spill in the “Everglades of the North,” the Bad River tribe of Northern Wisconsin sued to have an aging pipeline removed, and won. But the pipeline remains and a proposed reroute would still pass through their watershed.
insideclimatenews.org
A 71-year-old crude oil pipeline on the reservation of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa could be removed after a legal fight, but it might simply be rerouted nearby.

I also wrote a story about Enbridge's Line 5 reroute project:

As another winter approaches, with another presidential election promising a new administration regardless of who wins, tribal leaders are uneasy.

This summer, I had the opportunity to visit the Kakagon Sloughs on the Bad River Band's land. The opportunity to learn about the beauty of the area really moved me.

It's definitely a dream to report on a beat that makes me say "what the hell" at least once per week. My latest for @journalsentinel / @Report4America

This gorgeous story by @caitlooby is well worth your time. Beautifully written, and critically important about the Kakagon Sloughs and the Ojibwe's fight to protect the region. https://t.co/Dl6r2lrHBQ

Congratulations to @Madeline_Heim/@JournalSentinel for winning second place in the feature reporting category for: “The Mississippi River is central to America's story. Why doesn't it get more love?”
jsonline.com
The Mississippi carries far less reverence than other iconic water bodies across the U.S., and it has consequences that affect everyone living in the basin.

It's a crazy news week w/ reporters doing incredible work documenting what's going on in Wisconsin. If you have a minute to fill your sense of wonderment, here's a story about what I learned is hiding on the bottom of Lake Michigan.
jsonline.com
At the bottom of Lake Michigan, an underwater forest, a Russian satellite, more than 1,700 shipwrecks and other discoveries unlock secrets of the past.
