A writer defending the American system. A joy to friends, a woe to enemies.

“I hate war!” FDR famously declared in 1936. After the sellout at Munich, however, he came to understand that this sentiment was insufficient. Americans had a stake in the freedom of Eurasia––the preservation of which was worth fighting for. Hate war, yes, but fear dishonor.
MAHER: “One good thing about Trump is he really, really does not like war.” HINES: “I love that about him.” MAHER: “I kind of do…”

This is a thoughtful, extensive review essay of my new book from @bstewart1776 in @quillette. He takes me to task for being too critical of America's sins and conceding too much to progressives. But I'm a progressive myself and I'd like to persuade them 🧵 https://t.co/TqsMydcM0W

Shadi Hamid has an uneasy conscience, and he doesn’t yet know what to do with it.

It behooves progressives to stop the promiscuous use of the term “ban.”
Margaret Atwood, author of 64 books including “The Handmaid’s Tale,” has seen her work banned for content deemed overly sexual, morally corrupt, and anti-Christian. https://t.co/nBbi6le8WX

Brilliant from Yuval Noah Harari -- that this isn't common sense to everybody is sad. https://t.co/3Sg9xRbY6O

Both sides must abandon false moral certainties and oversimplified historical narratives if the cycle of violence is to be broken

As sympathetic as I am to almost any case for American power, my reservations about @shadihamid's result from intrinsic doubts that progressivism is the proper vehicle for this cause. Read the essay:

Say what you like about gangsters, disloyalty is not among their vices. If only the president had similar allegiance to his oath.

AOC is savvy enough to recognize that successful candidates in New York City won't resemble those in Virginia. But her preference is clear, and AOC's party would be a gift to MAGA.
As I wrote in August 2024: "Formerly a factional leader against the Democratic establishment, [AOC] has positioned herself as a bridge between the party’s mainstream and progressive wings." She's not fighting the party, but aspiring to lead it.

A bipolar order in the Democratic party.
Josh Shapiro says he spoke to Zohran Mamdani recently by phone. "Mamdani called me, and we had a very lengthy conversation, and I was very direct with him about how hurtful some of the words were that he used or that he allowed to be used around him. He explained to me his

It’s contemptible for an American official to promote the cause of “benevolent monarchy.” Does Barrack think he is Lee Kuan Yew?
U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack: “Since the fall of the Ottoman Empire, everything the West has done has been a mistake.” From Versailles to Oslo, he said, “taking the colonial mandate and placing on tribes and flags has never worked.” What

The venn diagram of people who were friends with Dick Cheney and who would vote for Zohran Mamdani has precisely one guy in it
"Dick Cheney—a man I admired and was proud to consider a friend—has died at age 84. I honor his life, and mourn his death. What a life! He held positions of the highest responsibility in government, and carried them out with conviction and distinction..." https://t.co/jrIZxssRgC
