When a student is referred to PA's BrainSTEPS Program, their school receives brain injury consultation & training from the district’s regional Intermediate Unit BrainSTEPS team.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that disrupts the brain's normal function. Not all blows or jolts to the head result in a TBI. The severity of a TBI ranges from mild to severe.

Children’s brains are not developed like adult’s brains. What does that mean? This means following an injury to a child’s brain, the full effects of the injury may not be revealed until several years later.
