“Beloved public pools, when they receive good investment, attract Americans of many backgrounds, creating a space for people to swim and play together who may not otherwise interact…they are an essential piece of social infrastructure in a democracy.”

When I was a kid, my dad was in school so during the summer he'd drop us off at the pool and we'd spend the day there. It was great and it cost like $2. Everyone was there. And then 15 years ago, the city I lived just up and filled it in with concrete rather than maintain it.

Typical American problem, divesting from a public resource that could be useful because apparently unnecessary numbers of people dying is fine.
