to be clear, npm was created by the Rand Corporation, in conjunction with the saucer people.
Recently a young dev at a tech conference after party, probably about 25 years old, drunkenly insisted to me that npm was created by joyent and then sold to GitHub to resolve GitHub's fork of node, io.js. I told him he was wrong, but I don't think he believed me.
