I believe the open source model is untenable. @pauldix gave a good overview in his talk so I won't repeat it here:

I would like to clarify some things with regards to my BoltDB README message.

It was always implicitly the goal to finish Bolt. There was never going to be a Bolt 2.0. Sometimes software should just be done.

Posting the message was a way to explicitly state that goal so everyone knew where BoltDB stands.

I've been MIA from the community for the last year several reasons — depression, health issues, etc — that ultimately turned into burnout.

That burnout is what pushed me to write the message.

@pauldix Some people (such as @mperham ) have made independent open source businesses. But that's an exception in this industry.

@pauldix @mperham In my opinion the problem is that there is a mentality of not paying for software.

@pauldix @mperham The number of people offering to pay for BoltDB support vs people complaining about my lack of free support is SHOCKINGLY low.

@pauldix @mperham There are services for accepting money (e.g. Patreon) but that's not the issue. The issue that it's not normal to pay for OSS software.

@pauldix @mperham I believe that @GitHub needs to figure out a way to normalize independent open source business.

@pauldix @mperham @github @GitHub is effectively the sole gatekeeper of open source.

@pauldix @mperham @github If @GitHub added the ability to sell support plans or priority issues then I believe companies would pay for them.

@pauldix @mperham @github They can even take a cut off the top and make a killing. It's in their best interest.

@pauldix @mperham @github Right now that's the only way I see open source becoming sustainable.
