You know what would be a cool hackathon? Where people get together and implement academic research papers. That would be badass.

The goal wouldn't be to have a finished project. Just learn a lot and collaborate. Would make research papers less daunting too.

That brings up a good question: should looking at a ref repo be allowed? It'd be interesting to go purely from the paper.

Another remote-friendly option would be LayerTennis style. Pass a repo back and forth adding incremental functionality.
