A few years back, there was a 4 way tie for first (unless it was 5 π€·ββοΈπ€·ββοΈ)β¦ in the Sinquefield Cup. They had the same rules, but Carlsen, one of the top 2, said βeveryone plays the playoff, or I donβt play!β After a meeting of the organizers, they agreed to nobody plays. Integrity
Therefore, Aronian, Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana tied for first β in points and in all tiebreak criteria! The rules stipulated that a drawing of lots would decide which two players would go to the playoff β Carlsen objected, as he thought it to be 'ridiculous'.
Finally, the players and organisers decided all three would be declared co-winners! β¦Sorry, it was 3 players. Same thingβ¦
@MagnusCarlsen
did not want one player left out.

Sinquefield cup is based on round robin system. Current championship is based on Swiss scoring system. In Swiss system two players can have same points but different ranking. Carlsen clearly ended at 3, not tied to first at all.
@ben_finegold
It seems like no surprise that
@FIDE_chess
can mess up the big stuff when they canβt even figure out how to have a four person playoff for a world championship.
@ben_finegold
I don't remember Ben. Did it really happen, or did you make it up to point out some kind of hypocrisy from his part? I mean, he is right anyway. Coin tosses should be ruled out in determining a WC in any format (although it is not a first for sure)
@ben_finegold
I def donβt agree if the implication is Nepo or Abdusattorov shd do this now. Every competition has rules and all understand you need to win per those rules. The βbestβ player/team doesnβt always win, and good thing. As they say, thatβs why you play the game(s).
@ben_finegold
This is a Swiss though; just because players end up with the same amount of points it doesnβt mean they are equally deserving. Drawing/losing in earlier rounds could lead to some players facing a weaker opposition than others.
@ben_finegold
I thought it was because Fabi needed to also play So in a tiebreak for Grand Chess Tour points for the right to go to the finals? Your story is way better.
