‘Aggressive prostate cancer’ is a subjective term, Gleason score is judged by humans - 6 not aggressive and 7 is aggressive.... Isn’t it time to germline test all prostate cancer patients? All cancer patients? #freeTheDNA @DrRakeshPatel @md_rosen @WhitworthMD @NoelPugh

It’s estimated that 13% of men in the U.S. will develop prostate #cancer within their lifetime. Recently updated #NCCN guidelines recommend that all men with aggressive #prostatecancer consider #genetictesting, regardless of family history. Learn more:

The emperor (NCCN) is still naked - guidelines to decide which cancer patients need germline genetic testing DO NOT WORK & harm patients AND THEIR FAMILIES! It is time to pressure the @NCCN to change their antiquated economic road blocks (guidelines). #FreetheDNA @DrRakeshPatel

New @MayoClinic study finds that 1 in 6 patients with #colorectalcancer had an inherited cancer-related gene mutation, which likely predisposed them to the disease. Researchers also discovered that 60% of cases would not have been detected with a standard guideline-based approach

Any 'guideline' excluding some breast cancer pts will miss pts with pathogenic mutations! I'm truly perplexed at the reticence to test ALL breast cancer pts. Yes there will be PV's w few management guidelines & VUS's (don't act on these)- it's OK we can handle these minor issues

In her new blog, Maureen Graham explores the big question: Would expansion of the #NCCNGuidelines - rather than universal testing of all women with #breastcancer - be a reasonable compromise for detection of inherited #cancer susceptibility? More here:

Direct-to-consumer #genetictests use SNP genotyping to identify common variants in the general population — but exactly how accurate are they in identifying rare mutations?  Results from a recent study published in #theBMJ suggest SNP chips are “the wrong tool for the job.”

“Think of it this way: When your doctor orders genetic testing, it’s akin to fishing for a particular fish, in a part of the ocean where it’s known to live. A DTC test is more like throwing a net into the ocean and seeing what comes back.” More here:
