Digital tools are transforming #Alzheimer research. A new systematic review from researchers at the #BBRC (@claudiaportam & @GSBenavides) explores the validation status of digital cognitive assessments for AD. Published in @alzdemjournals

Her thesis explored dementia-prevention interventions using insights from the PENSA and FINGER trials of the WW-FINGER network, tackling some of the key challenges in prevention research.

The project will follow 200 participants from the ALFA+ cohort, analysing nocturnal blood pressure, olfactory function, advanced MRI measures, cognitive performance and biomarkers. It will also examine sex differences and menopause-related changes.

A new BBRC study, GLYMPH-AD, led by Dr. Gonzalo Sánchez Benavides, will explore how sleep blood pressure patterns may affect Alzheimer’s risk, focusing on the glymphatic system, the brain’s cleaning mechanism. 🔬🧠

In summary: digital cognitive assessments show strong potential to enhance early detection, monitoring, and accessibility in AD research & care. But limitations remain, which must be carefully considered to ensure their effectiveness and broad applicability.

Beyond classification, the review highlights key factors for implementation: 💻 Device choice 🏡 Administration setting 👥 Study population 🌍 Demographic & socioeconomic influences

Using the FDA-BEST framework, the authors classified digital assessments within biomarker categories. Current evidence supports their role in: At-risk → identifying individuals in early, preclinical stages Monitoring → tracking cognitive changes over time

The review analyzed studies testing whether digital assessments align with: 🧪 Core AD biomarkers (amyloid, tau, imaging, fluid) 📝 Traditional cognitive tests 👉 Findings: digital tools detect subtle changes & correlate with biomarkers in the expected direction.

Compared to paper-and-pencil tests, digital assessments offer key advantages: ✔️ Repeated measures across time ✔️ Remote & at-home use ✔️ Accessibility in underserved areas ✔️ Non-invasive, scalable monitoring of early cognitive decline
