For me, it was a specific moment in 1981 when I saw the wizard at the cauldron on the opening screen of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord. It's so simple now, but then, it looked and felt like magic.

. on people, on games, on designs, and I think she’d like that a lot more than pages in a book that can be closed. Rest in peace, Laralyn. Thank you for all you’ve done, and thanks for being my friend.

“You have to write what you know down! Write a book. It’s going to be lost.” Yet, in the window of time between her passing and this post, I’ve seen dozens and dozens of people talk about what she shared with them, what they learned, and so I suppose she left her mark. .

Laralyn McWilliams was a true OG of the game industry and a close friend. It took me forever to write this through tears, to figure out what I wanted to say. I remember crying at one point during one of her battles with cancer, thinking. .

In spite of all evidence to the contrary and knowing just how ill you were, I think I convinced myself that you were going to make it. You’d beaten the odds so many times. I have difficulty accepting that you’re gone.

Laralyn, you’re going to be missed. I’ll miss you so much. You were a good friend, a good confidante, and someone I trusted implicitly. I can hear your laugh and the twist your voice would take when you had a point you wanted to make.

Laralyn also loved her husband Charlie. He was willing to chase Laralyn’s dreams with her, moving multiple times as her career took her places. When she fell ill, she often told me how amazing he was. I can’t even begin to imagine how Charlie is feeling right now.

She reminded me that I was a goddamn warrior, too. You can’t possibly put a price on something like that, and those types of friends are not replaceable. Christ, Laralyn, I will miss you.

Between us, we knew pretty much everyone, and we liked to talk about the things we knew. We exchanged war stories, highlights, and wait-until-you-hear-this moments. A couple years ago, I found myself in a dark place, I talked with her about everything and its effects on me.

She was a beautiful nerd. Laralyn liked to talk about nuanced game mechanics and how they might play out throughout a game, how they could adapt and mean more at one point when paired with another mechanic. She enjoyed talking about players and keeping things player-centric.
