My article, "We know what attention is!" is out in @TrendsCognSci . it argues that our experimental methodology commits us to a simple functional conception of attention. In that sense, we agree on and know what attention is. I will thread about it later. https://t.co/kwRCdmZmOM

A random thought on hiring: I would have thought a good rule of thumb is don't hire someone when all the letters of recommendation from previous coworkers are: "ABSOLUTELY DO NOT hire this guy!”.

Excited about this new paper! Suppose you lost half a field of view, or color vision, would you notice? In a new paper in @TrendsCognSci, we show that you probably wouldn’t! You can find out more about those striking failures of visual metacognition here: https://t.co/B3jESVMWTF.

Cog sci folks: Does anyone have a copy of Kahneman's "Attention and Effort" that they wouldn't mind parting with & selling to me? NB: people in the used book world are selling it as a collectors item. I don't think it is. Just want a working copy.

If you want a short introduction to attention (or want to pass it on to your students), please have a look at the articles on attention and much else at the new Open Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science. More articles are forthcoming. Attention

New results!! Congratulations to @_ramanujans and Martyna Czarnik on their tour de force study that revealed a simple but remarkably flexible mechanism explaining how we use visual information in all sorts of ways. 🧵1/

We use sensory information in remarkably flexible ways. We can generalize by ignoring task-irrelevant features, report different features of a stimulus, and use different actions to report a percep...

If you are a member of @VSSMtg see posted video of the symposium on attention that generated a lot of discussion & controversy. We do need to make conceptual progress on attention, so check out the content! @AlonZivony @RuthRosenholtz @GWUAttentionCo1 and Britt Anderson.

If you're a cognitive scientist in the US who likes philosophy, you might enjoy reading this: attention, intention, agency, working memory, reasoning, bias, introspection. Not cheap (sorry, not my choice), but it's on a decent discount (35%) @ Amazon https://t.co/qFbqBo3g4l

Just overheard a group of VSSers talking about the state of cog neuro on the beach. Kripke, Davidson and DiCarlo in the same breath. Sounded like a fun and interesting conversation. 👍 #vss2024

Piggy backing on this great event to note intellectual link. I'm speaking @ symposium (Fri) @vssmtg on attention, building on my 2023 phiVIS talk: (a) we know what attention is (b) there is no internal/external attention distinction & (c) we can unite different kinds of attention
phiVis is back @VSSMtg, on May 21! Featuring Ian Phillips (@ibphillips), Jeremy Wolfe (@jeremymwolfe), Rosa Cao, Talia Konkle (@talia_konkle), Tiina Rosenqvist, and Bevil Conway (@BevilConway). Also: Wine, and good company. Details + registration 👉 https://t.co/AtTNQDu6mq

Video (practice) of talk this Fri at @VSSMtg in a symposium organized by @AlonZivony with @RuthRosenholtz, @GWUAttentionCo1, and Britt Anderson. I argue we should reject the internal/external attention distinction & show how to organize types of attention. https://t.co/yLKzm6x0DP
