Some thoughts on Wirtz… [THREAD] 🇩🇪 I’ve heard Slot scream ‘Lucho wide’… ‘Cody wide’ a million times on the touchline this season [no exaggeration — actually, just a bit]. It’s safe to say he prioritises winger isolation in wide areas. This aligns with a broader trend in

I don’t think Slot will change formation. We’ll see some 4-4-2 adjustments here and there like the Frankfurt game but I’ll be very surprised if we see something week in, week out, especially going to a back 5. It’s not going to happen imo. #LFC

This was only half of what I wanted to write and conclude, but it’s a lot less fun when you can only post about 8 tweets without a blue tick and your character length is limited. Anyway, Liverpool’s structure wasn’t bad, it’s just City were really aggressive and we couldn’t cope.

Again LFC trying to aid the right side, both Szobo and Grav go and this time #LFC do get the ball into an attacking position (happened a few times tbf) but because of a bad touch the attack broke down. I’d love to write more but for some reason Elon has taken my blue tick away.

Btw, again, 4-2 structure for Liverpool. Distances look fine. Foden jumps on Konate, Grav looks to the space in behind Doku & pictures a release point for Liverpool, but City put the squeeze on again. Nico comes across, O'Reilly leaves Salah and jumps on Grav = City win the ball.

Here again. Mac Allister splits the CBs, Szoboszlai drops in, Grav goes across to receive a simple ball down the line but look at City’s intensity in winning the ball back… #LFC

was fine. That was the general theme for City — press with intensity but drop in a 4-5-1 if you have to. Something similar Liverpool did to Real Madrid in midweek. Not the 4-5-1 but same principles.

We even saw Gravenberch allow Bradley to push Doku back at times and receive in the RB position. Wirtz coming central to cater for that. It relieves a bit of pressure but is Gravenberch progressive from those positions? City picked their moments and sitting off in a mid/low block

Again, structure isn’t totally bad from Liverpool. 4-2 with the DP, but look at Foden. You can’t get better screening than that! Haaland jumps on VD, no pass to Gravenberch (Liverpool’s usual get out on the half turn), force the ball long or to Konate. #LFC

Liverpool tried to facilitate buildup in getting players in a decent structure but City’s intensity was way too much on the day. City left Robbo free as they knew the switch isn’t going to come from the opposite side and allowed Cherki to squeeze too. #LFC

This happened quite a lot. Liverpool did have the midfielders get closer to the back line to aid buildup but City did funnel the ball into the right areas. Foden was an integral part to City’s success from a pressing perspective. #LFC

Maybe if you get rid of the half-hearted press and the passive mid-block then the players will have a better chance of stamping some sort of authority on the game. #LFC

Slot needs to do something radical to get Liverpool back on track. He hasn’t found a solution to the way teams are setting up against us since last season. I feel liverpool need a reset in the full back areas until they bring in another ball playing CB. If Jones, Szoboszlai,

Liverpool will not find on the ball security in the backline until Slot does something radical from now until January and then look to bring in the likes of Guehi. They’re also desperate for their own versions of Calafiori/Timber/Gvardiol profiles. One of these must happen. #LFC

Liverpool’s problems. - Chronic buildup issues leading to other issues. - Slot’s passive principles - Lack of physicality in areas especially from the LCM position - Speed & 1v1 threat of the wings - Not enough passers in the team causing rest defence issues. And more.. #LFC

Konate and Bradley will need to improve in buildup if we don’t want to be a team that consistently gets countered on next season. Deep progression from the right side needs to be sorted. I like Bradley top of the box at times but we have to make sure there is more security. #LFC

When you lack technical security and you’re faced against an aggressive press Gravenberch is forced to split the CBs, Szobo is wider and the full backs are higher. It relieves the pressure off the backline. This should have happened from minute 1, not from 2-0 down. #LFC
