Feeling emotional today because I’m really, deeply happy. I am finally living in a city that feels like home. Last night I facilitated an author talk at a community bookstore I love with a poet who I admire. Today I started my dream job teaching creative writing to teens.

My partner is on his way to my house for our weekly walk at my favorite park. And when I entered my bedroom just now to read a book I got from my neighborhood library, the way the sunlight filtered into my room was so beautiful I started crying.

I really thought my life was over when my last relationship ended. It tore me to pieces. I suffered for a really long time trying to hold on to something that was hurting me, because I couldn’t see what would come after.

Since then, I’ve clawed my way out of my own sadness and lack every day. And I continue to be astonished at how beautiful things can still be. I thought losing love would be the end of me. It still makes me sad to think about, but I gained so much in its absence.

I keep looking at the life I’ve made and telling myself: You did that. Remember where we started? You did that!
I keep looking at the people who stuck with me and telling them: Thank you for still being here, it means everything.
