Just heard that the original BBC TV series of Quatermass and the Pit will be available on iPlayer by the weekend. It's the restored 2005 edition but without vidfire processing. Essential viewing.
The BBC steps up to the plate... If you still think defunding the BBC would result in this kind of response from any other broadcaster then you are sadly deceiving yourself. Read the thread, they are overhauling every aspect in service of the country...
If schools close.... BBC also announcing a daily educational show for key stages and year groups on iPlayer, expanding BBC Bitesize, educational podcasts etc and BBC Four doing shows on A Level and GCSE curriculum.
Oh hell! Sad to hear that the wonderfully eccentric character actor Dudley Sutton has passed away. Best known for playing Tinker in Lovejoy Sutton also appeared in the such cult films as The Leather Boys and The Devils. One of his last roles was in Cockneys Vs Zombies.

Darren its an ITV production on a service mainly owned by ITV. It was never shown on the BBC.
Congratulations are due! You've won my Spanner of the Week award. Here is your prize...
If you're a Nigel Kneale fan then you must listen to 'You Must Listen', a new adaptation of Kneale's lost 1952 radio drama, on Radio 4 tomorrow at 2:15pm or later on catch up.
Ludicrously happy with today's car boot finds. Got the complete Professionals blurays for a quid each! Bloke who sold them said he was getting rid as "you can stream everything now".
Rolf report Dec 16: My GPS tracker showed I’d decided not to stay too long on campus (there’s hardly anyone around to feed me or let me into buildings) & I was on my way home. I walked around to the front garden & sat by my favourite catmint bush. Oh the simple pleasures! Rolf x
Most directors only ever make one thing of longevity and notability. Piers Haggard made several. Folk Horror cornerstone Blood on Satans Claw, audacious TV series Pennies from Heaven, the final sombre Quatermass and much more. He will be missed. RIP.
Here is a little thread on the actor Michael Gothard who only made a handful of film and TV appearances during his short career, but has acquired something of a cult following.
Just finished a script to screen comparison of the Beasts episode Baby. Its just as powerful in text and there are a couple of cut scenes, probably for timing reasons, that add some depth and colour to the characters. The ending is possibly even more distressing on the page.
Very excited to announce that Jane Wymark will be joining me to celebrate Nigel Kneale's horror anthology series Beasts and help launch The Book of Beasts at the Festival of Fantastic Films in Manchester on 22nd October. Ticket details at
I am very excited to announce that The Book of Beasts will be launched at The Festival of Fantastic Films in Manchester over the weekend of 20-22 October.
There will be a panel of very special guests discussing Beasts and Kneale's work and...
Very pleased to announce that this week I signed a contract with a publisher for The Book of Beasts. No news on release date yet, sometime next year, but work is far from over. Editing, formatting, general tidying up and tidbits of info keep turning up...
Big day for research on the Book of Beasts... finally getting access to the project file. That's Nigel Kneale's handwriting on the cover. I wonder what treasures are within?
Book of Beasts has been given some very wonderful news today from Nigel Kneale's estate - permission to quote from the original scripts for the series in the publication. This means so much to me and the book as it allow me to fully explore the journey the series had to screen.
It's my birthday today and the best present has to be my contributor's copy of Fortean Times 437 out on 5th October. 'A Feast of Beasts' discusses the Fortean origins of Kneale's TV horror anthology...
Only 6 Conservative MPs wearing masks in Parliament.
All opposition MPs have face coverings on. All Parliament staff have to wear a mask. I don't think I need to comment as this says it all really...
Awful news. Without them releasing Beasts on DVD my book probably wouldn't exist. Also my son with ASD collects their releases and this is going to really upset him.
This week I will mainly be exploring this TV horror anthology obscurity, sometimes called The Spanish Twilight Zone, from the director of Who Can Kill A Child and The House That Screamed.
Today has been cheered up by a lovely email from Jane Wymark who has kindly shared some memories of making the Beasts episode Baby for the book on the series.
For all the logo nuts, and classic film freaks out there, this is a thread about the creation of the Universal Pictures logo (1936 - 1947). It’s an excellent logo. I present it here, in appreciation of the sheer craft involved in making it. 1/16
The first unmade episode of Beasts is a macabre tale of father and son bonding over the discovery of a creature hibernating under their home. It involves matricide, madness and many of the usual Kneale tropes. It is ambitious and would have been technically challenging to make.
Without
@ohsinnerman
cheering me on, picking me up when I'd fallen or guiding me through the trials and tribulations this book would probably never have got finished.
I am *very* proud to have supplied a foreword to Andrew Screen's magnificent book on Nigel Kneale's BEASTS - it's been beautiful to see this book develop and grow from ot's early drafts. Out October 2023.
Just emailed the final copy edits for The Book of Beasts to
@Headpress
. Layout and PDF proofing next and then it's off to printers. Everything on schedule for October publication.
Might have a beer to celebrate 😉
Another review of the Book of Beasts.
"Screen’s book is the most interesting, inviting and entertaining commentary on the work of Nigel Kneale I’ve encountered. A great tribute to possibly Nigel Kneale’s most peculiar body of work."
Gosh!
The Nigel Kneale stamps are even lovelier irl. Set comes with a mini UV torch which reveals a secret message on each stamp. Not the best photo, but the Beasts stamp says "Wait til he's hungry"!
Having covered all the episodes of Beasts I've now moved onto documenting the unmade story treatments. There are three altogether, two typed and one handwritten by Kneale.
@Headpress
It's a massive 430 pages including an index. So thrilled and can't wait to hear what people think of it. The book is published on 5th October, only twelve days from now...
Sunday 22 October is the 'Day of Beasts' at the Festival of Fantastic Film in Manchester. The official launch of the BOOK OF BEASTS in partnership with publishers Headpress.
Surprised that the UK DVD release of the complete series of The Fantastic Journey (1977) hasn't been mentioned! It should be out the end of April. I have fond memories of watching this short lived sci-fi show in school holidays. Anyone else?
Yesterday at Festival of Fantastic Films was a lovely blur. Wonderful to meet Jane Wymark, Steve Volk, Andy Nyman and many others.
Now onto day 2 and the Day of Beasts!
It's World Book Day so here is my little contribution to reading material. The Books of Beasts: Folklore, Popular Culture and Nigel Kneale's ATV Horror Series. Includes details of unmade episodes, inspirations behind the stories and much more. Available from
