So close but so far. 2x is the same as 2 × x, and the parenthesis only takes precedence in that the expression contained must be evaluated first. It doesn't imply precedence in multiplication.

Let's break this down. When written explicitly instead of its pure algebraic form, we can write the left side expression as follows:
8 ÷ 2 × (2 + 2)
^ the part people forget
Then it's simple PEMDAS:
8 ÷ 2 × 4
4 × 4
16 = 16
The wrong way:
8 ÷ 2 (2 + 2)
8 ÷ 2 (4)…

So close but so far..the 2(4) does take precedence because of parenthesis..it's the same as if you had 2X, they are intrinsically attached.
