More penguin molt research!
When most birds moult they are at risk of getting chilly, but not gentoo penguins. During their moult they growing a double layer, keeping the original feathers before shedding them, potentially causing them to overheat when its hot @alewden @AntoineStier

It's been a very worrying start to the season for Guillemots on the Isle of May, with large swathes of the cliffs remaining hauntingly empty... #seabird #island #fieldwork #Scotland
What has happened to all the Isle of May guillemots? The first egg was the latest ever but adjusting for that we should still be peak laying now and the cliffs are terrifyingly empty. Even those that have laid don't seem committed and are losing their eggs at an alarming rate.1/2

Thin ice in the Ross Sea is exposing a major problem for Adélie penguins. 🐧 Declining sea ice in critical molting habitats endangers entire colonies, @PointBlueConSci scientists report. https://t.co/lHkH6GUIrt 📷: Jack Green, NSF, Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 #NSFfunded

Adélie penguin populations need breeding habitat to thrive in the Antarctic Ross Sea, but a study points out an underappreciated bottleneck for adult survival of the charismatic birds: sufficient sea ice upon which to safely rest during an annual molt. https://t.co/2TxDv6prCs

Really excited to see this pub come out. Adélie penguins rely on sea ice for molting. It's been concerningly low at this critical time of year in the Ross Sea lately. Read more here:

"Those Krill really tie the ocean together, do they not?" Today we celebrate the first #WorldKrillDay recognising this vital and mighty little creature. Krill remind us of our deep connection with Antarctica as we consider future paths for life on our planet. #Antarctica 🇦🇶

Our own black hole! Astronomers have just revealed the 1st image of the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy using the @ehtelescope- a planet-scale array of radio telescopes that emerged from decades of NSF support. https://t.co/bC1PZH4yD6

Happy Monday! Here’s a portrait of an Adélie penguin taken by an Adélie penguin 🤯 Video loggers taped to a penguin’s back help us study foraging behaviors. They also provide a wealth of fun #picturesbypenguins
