This paper is the evolution of the last chapter of my PhD thesis, and it took several research years, from morphological data collection to many rounds of analyses and writing. I am deeply grateful to my coauthor and former advisor @Friedman_Lab for helping and guiding me! (6/6).

We show that the exclusion of fossils drastically changes our conclusions! Without fossils, we would infer a western Gondwanan origin and a continental vicariance process for the biogeographic history of arowanas and arapaimas! (5/n)

The very surprising result that the giant arapaima from the Amazon basin and other related freshwater fishes were ancestrally marine holds up under different methodological frameworks (biogeographic analysis vs ancestral habitat) and it is robust to phylogenetic uncertainty (4/n)

The new tip-dated phylogeny places these marine forms as Osteoglossidae, some of them related to extinct freshwater taxa such as Phareodus from Green River, others more closely related to extant arapaimas. It also establishes a new timeline for the evolution of bonytongues (3/n)

Marine bonytongues have been known from the fossil record for more than a century (we know >10 spp. now)! Yet, our work is the first attempt to place these marine forms in a time-calibrated phylogenetic and biogeographic context, and in relationship with extant species (2/n)

New paper alert (open access)! Thanks to a new tip-dated phylogeny of bonytongue fishes (Osteoglossomorpha) with a large sample of fossils, we find that today's freshwater arapaimas and arowanas were ancestrally marine! (1/n)
