What policies do people demand from government in a world increasingly impacted by climate change? My new paper accepted @restatjournal explores the ways voters respond to climate-change related wildfires in California

Sewer and water infrastructures more than doubled the value of undeveloped land in 19th century Chicago. Just Accepted new paper by Michael Coury, Toru Kitagawa, Allison Shertzer (@econhist_allday), and Matthew A. Turner.

Check out coverage of my research on climate disasters and voting in @climate. Thank you @Mattg2235 for a thoughtful look at this question, just in time for election season!
More people in the US and Europe are experiencing floods, fires and other climate disasters, but it's not generally changing how they vote

Andrea La Nauze, Liam Falconer and I study @ThePurpleAir network in new research. Wildfire pollution increases air monitoring especially in wealthy areas. This suggests a role for public policy to improve monitoring in areas with strong environmental justice concerns.
Does wildfire smoke encourage individuals to provide public air-quality monitoring? This new #JEEM paper by @_mikes_mic, Liam Falconer, and @andrealanauze suggest that wildfire shocks lead to increased adoption of purple-air monitors π https://t.co/fSQB4bap78π

These sorts of voter demand shifts will only become more important as climate change impacts become increasingly widespread. Thanks @CAL_FIRE and @CASOSVote for compiling some great data!

However, partisan identity is still a powerful factor. I do not find an increase in support for Democratic US House candidates, despite Dems supporting the relevant policies at higher levels. Voters can change their minds on individual issues without changing candidates!

These effects are stronger in areas with more Republican voters. Fun fact- there are more Republicans in California than in Texas!

Consistent with an increase in demand for insurance in response to risk salience, voters also increase support for policies that increase redistribution and enhance the social safety net. Both of these responses tend to be relatively short-lived.

I find that voters increase their support for pro-environment policies endorsed by @SierraClubCA and @LCVoters by around 2.5 percentage points in areas recently exposed to wildfire.

California is a great setting to study this question because 1) CA has a lot of wildfires and 2) CA votes on A LOT of ballot initiatives-usually around 12 per election- this allows me to measure how voter preferences on specific issues change over time.
