Absolute nonsense in the Sun and Telegraph today claiming that the NESO report says Ed Miliband's plans will "restrict when you can boil the kettle" or require mandatory blackouts. It will make energy cheaper as @adamvaughan_uk reports in the Times

Welcome to hear the gov confirm funding for the Warm Homes Plan, providing certainty for installers & local authorities. £13.2bn was committed to home upgrades in the Labour Manifesto, so all eyes on the Comprehensive Spending Review in Spring to deliver the remaining £10bn🏠

There's a huge opportunity for the UK to be a real leader on clean flexibility. To do so, it needs to assess how to best channel funding towards the full suite of solutions – & not unintentionally lock-in status quo.

As we phase-out gas, it is right to question the future of the CM, which was designed to give long-term contracts to gas plants. One option is a gov-owned strategic reserve, removing some of the economic power of operators to demand high prices (particularly if using h2 or CCS).

Other solutions need rapidly scaling to balance a clean power system – demand side flexibility, energy efficiency, interconnectors & all forms of storage. It is not clear the CM is the right way to scale these, & indeed, the UK is looking to other ways.

The UK has confirmed a new scheme aiming to stimulate investment in the country’s long-duration energy storage (LDES) sector.

These more existential questions about the appropriate future role of gas remain unanswered. The UK is yet to set out it's bigger picture for 2030 (and beyond) - & the opportunity for cleaner forms of flexibility. More to come soon from NESO👀

Questions have been raised on how much we can & should rely on gas conversion to H2P & CCS. Overreliance could create a situation where we lock-in unabated gas, should these technologies not mature in time; or increase bills if they remain expensive.
ieefa.org
Recent energy price inflation may force governments to rethink their support for CCS (carbon capture and storage), adding to financing risks.

The current consultations consider a “transition stage” for gas plants in the shift to “low carbon flexible technologies”; defined as power with Carbon Capture & Storage (power CCS), hydrogen to power (H2P) & Long Duration Electricity Storage (LDES)

We’re seeking views on proposed changes to the Capacity Market (CM) to maintain the security of our electricity supply and to enable unabated gas plants to decarbonise.

The UK has bid farewell to coal. The next step, squeezing out gas, is central to 2030 clean power. Reforms to the gas plant subsidy, the 'capacity market', are underway. However, they are yet to answer more existential questions as we move to a fossil-free power system..🧵

Germany is proposing a huge gas subsidy by launching a 'capacity market' to prop-up uneconomic gas plants Our partners @bund_net, @Umwelthilfe, @WWF_Deutschland & others "firmly reject" expansion of fossil subsidies, and warn of carbon lock-in from overreliance on CCS & hydrogen

As farmers in rural communities report of one of the worst harvests in history due to climate breakdown, it's disappointing to see the Guardian run with a Telegraph-worthy headline opposing clean energy infrastructure in those very same areas. https://t.co/hYa2bxpU21

Distribution grids are critical for unlocking the clean industries of Europe's future, including: 🌞70% of renewables 🚗30mn EVs 🏠60mn heat pumps Despite this, many are slowing down the transition. Major industry groups are calling for change https://t.co/kV9k1fCRKh

Exciting to (finally) see the UK getting it's long-duration energy storage funding mechanism off the ground. This will be essential for 2030 clean power & to end the need for gas power stations to be kept online as "backup". https://t.co/EWyS0kTMhG

Nice write-up @tpstickings on @EU_ACER's scathing verdict of Europe's major grid operators' scenarios. I note for @Beyond_Fossils operators “are failing to plan for the necessary scale of renewables” which could increase energy bills & slow the transition https://t.co/TFKGngBhfZ

London is the region with the biggest share of private renter homelessness cases caused by landlords evicting to re-let. The Renters' Rights Bill will make a huge difference in the capital - but without further protections, landlords selling up will still fuel homelessness

BREAKING: New stats reveal 13,570 private renter households faced homelessness due to the landlord evicting to re-let. Abolishing Section 21 will outlaw this and reduce homelessness Compensating the 31,730 households evicted by landlords selling up would help cut it by even more

Chimes with research from @EmberClimate finding that several of European grid plans are based on under-ambitious energy scenarios - risking that networks will be inadequately prepared to support the expected wind & solar build out ☀️
