As of now, you CAN tag your fics with JUST the character or username! It's still linked to the canonical (currently RPF) tag. So tagging "Grian" will still bring your fic up if someone searches for "Charles | Grian". Same with "Etho" and "EthosLab (Video Blogging RPF)"

And yes, there are often multiple characters for one CC. But I don't see how that's any different from having multiple live-action characters played by the same actor.

Personally, I think changing the canonical tag to show just the username is still preferable Right now, AO3 depicts a RPF fandom that's full of mostly FPF but it's really a small% of RPF in a largely FPF fandom. It makes at least a bit more sense to have it represented as such
