Are university presidents really refusing to condemn calls to genocide Jews? It’s not as simple as that. The “calls for genocide of Jews” is a reference to chants of intifada, which literally means “uprising” in Arabic. (short 🧵)

How are we supposed to feel as American Jews after watching this? University presidents refusing to say that it’s harassment to call for the genocide of Jewish people. It’s only problematic if it’s put into action. What are we even talking about here?

I understand that when Jews see the word “intifada” they think of terrorist attacks in the early 2000s. But for Palestinians, intifada is a reference to popular uprisings. The first intifada in the late 80s was mostly non-violent, using tactics like strikes, boycotts, marches.

The idea that there are mobs of students calling for the genocide of Jews at America’s most elite universities plays into the right’s hands. It makes Jews think we are under attack. And it distracts from the daily atrocities being committed by Israel in Gaza. Enough.

@YonahLieberman Even the second intifada was primarily nonviolent for the first 5 months. In the words of former foreign minister Ben-Ami: "Israel’s disproportionate response to what had started as a popular uprising, with young, unarmed men confronting Israeli soldiers armed with lethal weapons

@YonahLieberman @ANeilan Stop it. Intellectualizing violence against any civilians is a slippery slope to violence and deaths of innocents - mostly Palestinians now. Just stop it - and condemn calls for violence!

@YonahLieberman If we’re being nitpicky, the word “intifada” popularly means uprising, but, literally it means “shake it off,” like the Taylor Swift song ✌️

@YonahLieberman If intifada is synonyme of uprising, how about better translating it as "revolt" or "rebellion". These can't be mistaken in western's mind and history.

@YonahLieberman Whatever the original reference, they were specifically asked if calls for Jewish genocide were against their policy. They flubberwallied.

@YonahLieberman @kthalps Where are these alleged cries? Intifada is resistance. Has nothing to do with genocide. Dropping bombs on babies in Gaza is genocide
