"Why don't female academics boycott"?
Because boycotting a conference does far more damage to the career of a woman who boycotts than to the career of the harasser, esp. if (as is likely) woman is junior to harasser.
Harassers need to change, not the people they harass.
@jenniferdoleac
Why in the world would academics at an academic conference/event, invite strippers to perform? That is mind blowing. Why don't female academics start boycotting conferences of this sort and conferences that involve/invite sexual harassers? Please emulate Iranian women. Stand up!

The fight being fought today is not necessarily for today's female academics. It is for those coming tomorrow, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years from now. This will be a ruthless fight and I am ready for it and we all better be ready for it.

This assumes discipline will get rid of harassers if today's women absent themselves, or rather are chased from, professional spaces. But why assume this? Keep in mind econ is & has historically been at back of pack in terms of gender (and race) ratios and rate of change in them.

The damage left by sexual harassment and/or sexual assault will never be repaired by any level of academic success. Yes, harassers need to change. But they'll never change until they are made to change. Today's sacrifice makes tomorrow's success.
Apparently there are now internal discussions at TAMU about whether I violated the dept code of conduct by naming a *senior* colleague in an earlier tweet. Meanwhile, other senior colleagues have known about his behavior for a while and done nothing. Onward. 🔥

Right. And it’s the men who need to boycott events like this (in case it’s not clear, I am NOT being sarcastic). Sadly, men saying they won’t put up with this kind of crap is much more likely to get results than the women boycotting. FFS people, what century is this?

, I am trying to find out whether there is any instance where women were given collective respect or rights without fight, struggle or “Good Trouble” as Rep. John Lewis used to say. I am ready for my history lesson. My pen and paper are ready.

couldn’t agree more, actually harassers need to leave! There should be zero tolerance for sexual harassment and that should be imposed by institutions rather than leaving the onus on victims to fight for safe environments!
