Reminds me of family night at my son's HS orientation. An assistant principal proudly announced that the strongest predictor of success in HS is involvement in extracurriculars. Only a desperate, pleading look from son stopped me from blurting out, "no, it's parental SES."
@NotoriousCath
Parental engagement tends to be associated with parental SES: higher income parents have more time and other resources to be involved in kid's schooling. And, the benefits of parent involvement on kid's achievement aren't as clear as is often assumed. E.g.

Don't resist. Set loose and let have. My kids' principal is SHOOK when he makes a claim, looks in my direction, and I squint my eyes and tilt my head sideways.
@MaliqMatthew
I was more concerned about my son's embarrassment level than AP's. That said, I have a lot of empathy for

teachers & school admins. It can't be easy working in district where such a high % of parents are (vocal) experts on topics but not on effective pedagogy for teens.

So I will academic you back. If SES is the predictor, then there is not much anyone can do about that (by definition otherwise it will not be a reliable measure to make an stable prediction).What she meant was the best way to enjoy HS (what of the system is under your control).

Best predictor of school success as opposed to individual's ranking within the school is the principal's belief that the kids will take part and enjoy themselves (the self-efficacy effect, pygmalion etc.) Blurting things out would have undermined that!
