❗The climate crisis is a water crisis❗ People experience #ClimateChange through too much or too little water – floods and droughts – and the impacts are devastating. Decision makers at #COP29 must take urgent action to solve these dual crises. #ClimateAction

Lalaina Andrianamelasoa, #Madagascar's Water Minister, said the country has some of Africa's largest freshwater supplied but has not optimised it, leaving parts vulnerable to drought. "We need a 360 approach to water that considers people, energy, agriculture & infrastructure."

Data helps identify, plan, budget and monitor how sanitation facilities are implemented. Effective monitoring and data can help make decisions about where to put money and effort. #WorldToiletDay

Floodwater can cause human waste to overflow and pollute communal water sources. Sanitation is only safe if it continues to function or is restored quickly after climate-related events and other shocks.  #WorldToiletDay

Funding these facilities can be expensive, especially when individual households have to pay for them — but there are cost effective solutions. But the cost of not investing in public sanitation is far greater, especially considering the days people are sick. #WorldToiletDay

Toilets are critical, but are not enough on their own. They need to be supported by an entire system including a trained workforce and regulation to manage, treat and transport waste safely. #WorldToiletDay

It's important that human waste is kept separate from people to stop the spread of pathogens. This helps keep communities healthy and create clean places to live, work and play. #WorldToiletDay

Ensuring everyone has a decent toilet involves lots of coordination. Waste has to be disposed of safely by a system that is supported by skilled workers, appropriately financed, and resilient to extreme weather events. When done right, the benefits are enormous. #WorldToiletDay

Toilets can change lives. Shabana used to have to use a toilet in the corner of an open field with other people all around. Now, with a safer toilet where she can manage her period privately, her life has transformed. #WorldToiletDay
