22yrs ago, Lona and I were sleeping in a tiny basement hiding from the Serbian military. Today I ran into her in her connecting flight from US. To little Drina who kept asking: why are you both crying?, she replied: because we were not supposed to be...here!
Thrilled to announce that I will start my tenure-track position at

@POLI_VUB
you are one fantastic team and I am happy I will continue working with every one of you! But first, bubbles and a party of three with some

Today in Brussels: “EU’s appeasement has only emboldened Vucic and his proxies to incite more violence and instability in Kosovo”.
Grateful to the student associations in Brussels and the (young) Kosovo women for doing the heavy lifting to make this happen.
Yet again, my parents (in🇽🇰) celebrate our daughter's bday (in🇧🇪) via FaceTime. There are no EU-visas and not even visa appointments for🇽🇰citizens. The degree of racism, breach of legal acts & human dignity normalized in visa centres of EU countries is unfathomable.

Saturday, October 7, 16:30 we will be protesting at Place du Luxemburg in Brussels against Serbia’s threat and attack against Kosovo and EU’s unconscionable silence.
Join us in Brussels & feel free to reach out for more info.
We need to talk about Serbia!
My take for
@kosovo2point0
on the curious case of the EU frontrunner - Serbia, its pro-Kremlin decade and EU’s unconscionable silence.
On the day that Russia invaded Ukraine, the front pages of government-affiliated newspapers in Serbia announced that Ukraine had attacked Russia.
When will the EU hold the Serbian government to account,
@VjosaMusliu
asks.
So excited to share our first article with the 'Yugoslawomen+ Collective'. 'The current migrant is asked to cast aside the reasons that brought her to our gates, and instead entertain the Western imagination of her worth to Western society.'

This weekend: Gjilan Theatre wins Kontrapunkt Theatre Festival in 🇵🇱 and Siparantum Choir (Peja) wins a European Choir Festival in 🇧🇪. It took these Kosovan artists an arm & a leg & a violation of every shred of their human identity to get their 7 day Schengen visas to compete.
Current President of Serbia isn't only the apprentice of Milosevic. The police brutality in Belgrade is the same as the one against protesters in Kosovo in the 1990s. So is the public broadcaster not reoprting on it. Only difference: this is against its 'own' citizens now
Brief thoughts on Kosovo.
1. Both-sideism has been the modus operandi of the international community in Kosovo from day 1 & has continuously legitimised (EU) interventionism.
Here it's exposed raw due West's insistence to appease Serbia & a continuous attempt at revisionism.
The ousting of
#Kosovo
's gov is a classic intervention from above we have seen countless times in Latin America & elsewhere where the West has intervened. It shows again that international statebuilding will only favor democracy, if it suits its further interventionist agenda:
Because
#Kosovo
is in the spotlight again, a kind reminder that
@gezimvisoka
& I published an edited book where local scholars deconstruct a myriad of topics of international & European interventions and statebuilding. And yes, the local can speak!
If the horrendous developments of the past 5+yrs in the UK were to have happened *anywhere* in the ‘Global South’, I can only imagine the volumes of special issues & conference themes on “authoritarian/fascistic turn”. Amazing how certain places are exempted from such scrutiny.
Those who continue to turn a blind eye to the clear and ample evidence of what unfolded last week in Kosovo are the same who tolerated Milosevic in the 1990s and emboldened Vucic in the past 10 years.
But yes, it's Kosovo that remains sanctioned by the EU!
Pictured: The terrorists who carried out the attacks trained in Pasuljanske Livade, one of the Serbian Army's key bases, ~4 days before the attacks. Other exercises took place in the Kopaonik base. The attacks enjoyed the full support & planning of the Serbian state.
My take for
@kosovo2point0
on why the🇽🇰-🇷🇸 recent developments are not about the license plates.
For Kosovo, sovereignty remains beyond reach, whereas for Serbia, Kosovo's sovereignty is beyond repair. With the EU dangerously oblivious in the region today, real lives at stake.
Kosovo is a place where the EU experiments with new forms of statebuilding, all without fully acknowledging Kosovo as a state.
@VjosaMusliu
writes on Kosovo, Serbia, the EU, and license plates.
The Belgian visa office in Kosovo will not even allow my mom (a teacher in her mid-60s) to apply for a visa, before - wait for it - the Federal Asylum Office in Brussels approves her file first. The feds, we are told, will take 3-4 months to review her file.
My students have been writing proposals for an 'EU peace deal for Kosovo and Serbia' as part of their assignments. I see more visions, strategies & knowledge (this is unfortunate) among recent graduates than I see at the 'facilitator'.
EEAS, our campus is only two stations away!
🧵
Did you know that Borrell has more than once, explicitly & emphatically supported Serbia’s refusal to recognize Kosovo?
He also opposed the creation of the Kosovo Army & angrily attacked the IOC when they demanded Spain treat 🇽🇰 athletes as equals.
Here are the receipts. ⬇️
Our daughter is telling the police officer, for the second time, that she will not get out of the pond until she finds her toy fish. Mind you, her sentences are a combination of Dutch, Albanian and Turkish. The police officer is standing there...waiting for the toy fish 🤩

This is going to be one exciting book. Atdhe did archival research in Prishtina, Tirana and Belgrade and the book is filled with raw and unearthed evidence. Also, a rare insight on how well developed was pre-war activism in Kosovo

Yet another one. 21 years after the war in Kosovo, mass graves with Albanians have been 'literally emerging from the woods' & lakes in Serbia. After killed in Kosovo in 1999, civilians were transported & buried in Serbia to hide the evidence. <1600 are still not found👇
If an ethnic group commemorates air strikes as a recognition of its human & political agency, that says more about the regime they were under rather than the ethnic group itself.

Hana's work is impressive. Yet, I find this video of EEAS ironic to say the least. Kosovo's cutting edge creators & artists are the only 'Europeans' unable to travel & work in the EU and have to go through utterly degrading & expensive visa procedures every single time.

This image of Petrit lined up with other refugees from Kosovo will always remain surreal to me. Seems like a carefully curated installation, much like his great work displayed all around the world today. Except, it’s bare life!
1999: Petrit Halilaj, center, in green coat, was an 11-year-old refugee fleeing genocide.
Today: Petrit is an accomplished Kosovo-Albanian artist whose past wartime experiences influence his artwork.

Late June 1999. This is me next to John with his division. I spent months translating for him, my broken English notwithstanding (I was 12yo). The man in his green t-shirt watching us proudly in the back is my father.
We spent hours playing with snow and the Mediterranean sun worshipper father stayed for an entire 5 minutes outside taking our pictures. We are so proud of him!

Free idea for a chilling article: The versatility of fridges & freezers in Serbian politics. From mass graves in 1999 to the election campaign in 2022.
Meanwhile, here's Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić coming out of a refrigerator on the most popular private and pro-government TV station, Pink.
The country's general elections are on Sunday.
Impossible to sugarcoat EU's stance on Kosovo as "constructive ambiguity", "organised schizophrenia" or else. It's blatantly discriminatory, racist-like and here is why:
- 🇽🇰's flag echoes that of🇪🇺.
- 🇽🇰's national anthem is called "Europe".
With heavy hearts we said goodbye to teta Xhangi, a friend, an icon of my hometown Gjilan, a godmother to us all & the fiercest person I've ever known. Dedicated her life to education & in her youth played football for Chelsea of London in the 1970s.
