Salmon boats held their own during WWII, all 6 survived. Salmon-class USS Stingray (SS-186) holds the record for the most war patrols of any
#USNavy
submarine at 16. Here's Stingray demonstrating how quickly she could surface & fire the deck gun!
The 2nd Salmon (SS-182) had the distinction of sustaining the most serious damage ever to have been survived by a
#USNavy
submarine. 30 close-range depth charges caused pressure hull deformation, flooding, & jammed stern planes.
Like a badass, she surfaced & gunned her way out!

That video is nuts, they're in only slightly more than a flat calm sea and they're very nearly decks awash, trying to man the gun. Towards the end it doesn't look that bad though. Still pretty nuts.
