What is required if we want to get serious about mental health in this country is something neither the far right nor the far left will like: investing in modern mental health facilities and then making it easier (with the protections of due process) to commit people there.

So it appears (no surprise) that the Michigan State shooter had a history of mental illness. But it isn't enough to note that, especially if you aren't demanding MASSIVE public investment in mental health services in this country.

This is the biggest thing we can do to help deal with the epidemics of gun violence, homelessness, and addiction. The far right wonโ€™t like it because itโ€™s expensive. The far left wonโ€™t like it because they think severely mentally ill people ought to be free range.

We have to recognize that the people who are so far gone that theyโ€™re living in their own shit need care. Long term inpatient care. And we have to recognize that while some of them may be able to attain sanity and be released, some will not. They need a safe space.

Whatโ€™s happening now is far too many of those people eventually burn through their friends and family and end up on the margins or the streets. They have kids and being children into that mess. The generational cycle of mental illness, abuse, and addiction repeats.
