I screened 40 titles exactly in the #Cannes lineup, and here are 15 films that excited me the most. Lynne Ramsay! Oliver Hermanus! Bi Gan! Joachim Trier! Hafzia Herzi! Oh mon dieu… For @ELLEmagazine:

Earlier today, driving around empty Catskills mountain roads with a murder mystery on tape as it gently snowed. In the evening, a glass of wine with a good friend at a cozy mountain inn. Now, next to a roaring fire, eating pie & watching The Holdovers. Thankful. ❄️♥️

The amount of promotional buy buy buy emails I got today is absolutely disgusting.

But I also recently learned that many Americans buy whipped cream in those weird spray bottle thingys instead of, you know, freshly whipping their own… Go figure… 🤔

That time of year in America when many Americans inexplicably prefer mass-produced chemical sludge that comes out of a tin with circular tin marks (kinda like some wet pet food), instead of totally yummy, freshly made cranberry sauce, the easiest thing to make in the world. 🥳

Yeah. I can totally see Jack Nicholson being this guy. 🤭
Want to hear a funny story about Jack Nicholson? I’m bored so I am going to tell you a funny story about Jack Nicholson. My mom is dating Jack Nicholson in the early 80s and he starts getting all these letters and phone calls from a deranged fan…

Is there such a thing called The National Lede Award? I’m pretty sure I found its inaugural winner. https://t.co/Bou31ppSql

I think we all need to allow ourselves this at times. It’s not dismissing other voices, but more about not needing to hear everything about everything all the time. It’d be one thing if people could be conversational. But most are argumentative (me included). So there’s no point.

Firmly in the “if the writing is good, I love reading reviews I don’t agree with” camp. Still, there are some films I don’t wanna read pans on. E.g. TRAIN DREAMS. I’m sure your arguments are valid & thoughtful. I just wanna sit in the quiet little place I created for it in my ♥️.

This was about Nuzzi obviously. I feel bad for the rest of the principled staff still left at VF…
A slap in the face, to be a good writer, to have principles & ethics, to always deliver good work, on time, with a smile, to not be able to find a real job that pays fairly in a sea of fake jobs AND watch a sexter of bankrupt morals get hired by a pub you once looked up to.

Having a voice backed by knowledge and personal insight is NOT THE SAME AS having an online brand. A lot of you should stop engaging with the latter group.

A lot of these online film personalities that El*n’s algorithm shoves down my throat (whose names I never heard of but who get a zillion likes/retweets on their annoyingly all-lower-case posts) think film criticism is a branding exercise. Buncha losers if you ask me. 🤷🏻♀️
