The team and I decided yesterday that I take a leave with an unknown time frame from our beautiful sport.
For too long I feel a big pressure to perform and I feel that I always want to do the best for the team, for all the sponsors, the fans etc. (1/4)
Devastated to leave the Giro like this, but it is what it is. Now it's time for a small break before looking at what's up next. Grazie Italia and
@giroditalia
!
Back home, feet up! Wishing Rob a speedy recovery after yesterday. Not too much luck coming our way this year
@TeamSunweb
but was good to see
@SamOomen
up there yesterday!
It's been an amazing 8 years with
@TeamSunweb
and I couldn't have got to where I am today without them. Thankful for everything we have achieved together!
Amazing memories and incredible results; our extraordinary journey together comes to an end.
Thank you
@tom_dumoulin
for everything, we wish you all the best for what’s next ❤

Would it still be possible to also compete at the triathlon
@Tokyo2020
? I did both swimming and cycling today and I’m also quite a good runner. Hope to hear from you (very) soon. Best regards, Tom
Taking the decision immediately felt like a big weight of my shoulders.
I’m going to do a lot of thinking and talking to a lot of people and I’m very confident that I will find the answers the coming period. (4/4)

I was shocked this morning when I read the news that my former teammate Georg Preidler has been accused of doping starting in the Giro of 2017. My thoughts:
I really need the time to get things clear in my head about what I want and how I want it.
It feels really good to take this step and I feel very supported by my friends and family and the team to take this step. (3/4)
We have decided that I will leave the Vuelta. Both our coaching staff and I think it is the best choice to get off the bike. At the start of the Vuelta I already felt tired and that feeling remained. It makes no sense for me to continue. (1/2)
As you all know, I had not been feeling well recently. Last week, we found parasites in my gut and since I started medication. I am feeling much better as I have had good training sessions today and over the weekend😃

I’m training at Teide at the moment. Starting to feel better again, and crossing my fingers for the races to continue later this spring with all the corona stress going on in Europe 🧐
But in that process I forgot my myself a bit. I forgot what I actually want within this sport and with my future. because I don’t have this answer clear for myself I’m actually also not doing the best for the people around me. (2/4)
