When I visit this site now, I see almost nothing posted by people whom I follow, just a stream of content I didn’t ask for about things I don’t care about, and lots of ads. So don’t expect much from this account any more except occasional shouting-into-the-void announcements.

So sad to hear of the death of Prof Michael Twyman, who nurtured many budding printing historians (including me) and whose support of and contribution to typographic history is celebrated in the most recent issue of the 'PHS Journal', demonstrating the breadth of his knowledge.

I wonder if this is a form that originates in or was more common in the southwest Devanagari style, or more specifically in Marathi texts?

This example of the closed form of ख is from 1805 (from Carey’s _A grammar of the Mahratta language_), which is earlier than I expected, since I mostly think of this as a modern, non-traditional form. Notably, it is different from the form used in Carey’s Sanskrit grammar. /1
