Franciscan Hermit. Silence & solitude surrounded by Cornwall's beauty & sustained by 'poems prayers & promises' & Sophie the Greyhound. Please No Lists or Tags
ANOTHER WAY TO PRAY: I remember a hospice patient telling me that she could no longer pray, no words, nothing worked. I asked her if she could lean back in her pillow in the same way John, the disciple Our Lord loved, leaned on Jesus.
She exclaimed, 'O Yes, how wonderful!'
Hello lovely people! I'm shall be off-line for some time as I'm going into hospital for some major surgery on Wed.
7-10 days on the ward barring hiccups! Then a lengthy recoup, so would appreciate your prayers, positive vibes, or whatever is your way! No need to respond, Bod. x

Teresa of Avila wrote a beautiful poem now often used as a prayer. It's simple format is calming.
Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you, All things are passing away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices.
BIRTHDAY TODAY!
How shall I celebrate?
Forget my voice, sing!
Forget my feet, dance!
Forget my life, live!
Forget myself and be!
Oh, and some chocolate would be nice!
Just returned home after 2 Ops, 1 week in ITU< sepsis & septic shock. Shouldn't be here but I am, thank God, and thank you all for your prayers. First short walk with Sophie, good to be in the countryside again... Return to Tweets later this year. Blessings, from BOD.
TONIGHT HOLD IN YOUR HEART:
All who are lonely,
children who are being bullied and dare not tell anyone; shy people who find it hard to make friends;
those who feel rejected and isolated;
those whose partner has died or left them,
and the elderly who miss their families.
Sophie says I haven't featured for ages... so here she is, happy to receive a Nose Boop from her followers:
Boop Boop! Bit like Toad of Toad Hall! (PS Where have my ears gone?! It's called being streamlined...
HERMIT RULE 11:
Live one day at a time. Take advantage of the moments and the dawns. Discover in each moment, in landscapes, in music and in all manifestations of beauty, the depth of your true interior solitude.
SEPARATION:
Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul there is no such thing as separation.
Old pals still with us.
To all of you this Christmas Eve,
Love and prayers from us all at the hermitage,
Sophie has resisted the Christmas Fudge, so far!! but as you can see there's a lot of sniffin' going on
WHAT IF... I should discover that the poorest of the beggars and the most impudent of offenders are all within me; and that I stand in need of the alms of my own kindness, that I, myself, am the enemy who must be loved — what then?”
Carl Jung
HERMIT RULE - Gen Intro:
Don't let your past disturb you. Don't fret about tomorrow. You are simply here and now with the Lord. He it is who calls you and you need know nothing else. Don't get lost by taking a shortcut or seek reasons to escape from your chosen path.
VOCATION:
Most of the Friaries I lived in when I was in Community had a Friary Dog... glad to see the tradition is still being upheld!
Friar Bigotón (Friar Moustache) a stray has joined St Francis Monastery in Cochabamba, Bolivia.
SOLITUDE is for me a fount of healing which makes my life worth living. Talking is often a torment and I need many days of silence to recover from the futility of words.
(Carl Jung)
Begin your day and your prayers in silence, for it is in the silence of the heart that God speaks. He is the friend of silence, we need to listen to God because it’s not what we say but what He says to us and through us that matters. Let's combine this with a walk, C'mon Sophie.
PRAY:
We remember this Iconic (literally) picture of the little Aleppo boy reminding us that Putin is repeating his miserable history once more... Join with me in praying tonight for the people of Ukraine and the children caught up in this atrocity. Holy Trinity hear our prayer.
HERMIT RULE 8: Work in silence, without saying what you do. Don't look for recognition or applause. Accept what providence itself affords you in relation to your actions.
Abbot Dom Joseph, Mount St Bernard Abbey
by Jean Goldsmith
RELATIONSHIP You cannot talk God into coming into you by longer and more urgent prayers, God is already present, God’s spirit is dwelling within you. All you can do is become quieter, smaller and less filled with your own self and its flurry of ideas and feelings.
Jesus & Menas
ONWARDS: You've heard of Kintsugi pottery a Japanese practice which mends broken pots with gold. Our journey is the same. We are called to be who we are with all our cracks and imperfections, God’s love/gold will mend our brokenness into something far more beautiful than it was.
WE PRAY FOR THE LONELY, children who are bullied and dare not tell anyone; shy people who find it hard to make friends; those who feel rejected & isolated; those whose partner has died or left them; the elderly who miss their families & friends.
Be with them in infinite love.
THE MORE I SIT in silence, the more I appreciate its profound effect on my being. Relying less and less on words to convey meaning, I find myself resting in a place of soft attention, and am one with all about me.
NIGHT PRAYER
The stillness of God be ours tonight
that we may fall asleep in peace
The awareness of the angels be ours
that we may be alert to unseen mysteries
The company of saints be ours
that we may dream of the river of love
The light of Christ be ours
this night and always.
GARDENER’S PRAYER
@TheMontyDon
Bless my little plot & the patience with which I’m tilling it, bless the seed I’m planting & the prayers I’m sowing with it. Bless the seasons to come & the sunshine & the rain. Bless the days and shortening nights, and the hopes of my small barn.
ASH WEDNESDAY:
From years working as a Mental Health Chaplain supporting the depressed & suicidal, I would change the words at the Ashing to, "From Love you came, and to Love you will return". They didn't need telling that they were dust!.. and I came to prefer these words!
MORNING PRAYER
Lord of life,
Help me to live this day Quietly, Easily;
To lean on your strength, Trustfully, Restfully:
To wait for the unfolding of your will Patiently, Serenely;
To meet others Peacefully, Joyously;
To face this day Confidently, Courageously. Amen.
St Francis
We pray for the lonely, for children being bullied not daring to tell anyone; shy people who find it hard to make friends; those who feel rejected & isolated; those whose partner has died or left them; and the elderly who miss their families. Lord be with them in infinite love.
THE CELTS loved thin places, boundary places, thresholds, the spaces between where we move from one time to another, as in dawn to day or dusk to dark; or in moving from secular to sacred space; times when old structures start to fall away & we begin to envision something new.
WOW! Breathtaking rainbow owl.
The beauty of creation is a reminder of God. When we respect any part of God's creation, we are seeing value in what God created and admiring the Creator.
CONTEMPLATION:
Contemplation is entering into a deeper silence and letting go of our habitual thoughts, sensations and feelings. The contemplative life is a matter of being so fully present to the moment that we cannot help but catch a glimpse of God in all that is.
SILENCE means leaving to God what is beyond my reach and capacity. A moment of silence, however short, is a holy stop, a sabbatical rest, a truce with worries. Silence makes us ready for a new meeting with God. In silence, God’s word can reach the hidden corners of our hearts.
STILL ME!
Today, Still me Lord
Still me, so that I can hear you
Meet me here in the morning light
I want to learn to love you
Take me deep
Bring your truth
Bring your light
And still me Lord!
(Adapt - Julie Connah)
SOMETIMES I SITS AN' THINKS, SOMETIMES I JUST SITS!
Sometimes I pray aloud and sometimes I sit in the quiet and read a psalm. Sometimes I feel the prayer, sometimes I don't. But the prayer I feel is the one I least expect, that arises in me, not from me... then I give thanks.
MIDDAY MOMENT
I sit in the place of quiet
Breathing in & out
I close my eyes to distraction
I close my ears to the world’s noise.
I sink into the presence of the Eternal One.
Divine love in me,
Holy love around me,
Enter the depths of my being.
SILENCE If The Desert Fathers said little about God, it's because they knew that silence makes more sense than words... So we too enter silence because like some 'thin' places we find on our travels they are places where we are more likely to encounter God. Any fav thin places?
NIGHT PRAYER:
Lord, speak to my mind & heart while I sleep, so that, when I wake, I may find that I have received in the night-time, light for my way; strength for my tasks; peace for my worries; forgiveness for my sins. Lord, grant me sleep tonight, and tomorrow, power to live.
MORNING PRAYER:
Sovereign God, I pray for peace in Israel and Gaza – for an end to hostilities and for peacemakers on both sides. Comfort all who mourn and all who are waiting to hear news of missing loved ones. Lord in your mercy....
PRAYER:
The wonderful thing about praying is that you leave a world of not being able to do something, and enter God's realm where everything is possible!
THE FRAGRANCE of GOD
Ever aware of God's presence by fragrance?
Only once for me at Tintern Abbey standing in the middle of these huge ruins, suddenly an overwhelming smell of incense. I asked a tourist if he could smell it too. He couldn't.
My SD said, 'sweets for the children'
HERMITAGE MOVE: The hermitage is moving across Bodmin Moor requiring a break as we relocate.
I wondered about Twitter vs the hermit way but said I'll try it for a year - that year is up.
So, did it work? Was it helpful? What next?
Tweet me kindly!
Love & prayers Bod & Sophie
MORNING PRAYER:
Lord of Life, Whether we're leaving behind a year of joy and blessing or trials and difficulties, we pause to give thanks. In this stillness, remind us of your presence now and in the year ahead.
Be blessed... Be the Light.
Stowes Hill, Bodmin Moor.
THERE ARE NO POCKETS IN A SHROUD:
"Remember that when you leave this earth you can take with you nothing that you have received - only what you have given: a full heart, enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage."
(St Francis of Assisi)
PONDER:
You come home,
make some tea, sit down in your armchair,
and all around there's silence.
Everyone decides for themselves
whether that's loneliness
or freedom.
HERMIT RULE 6:
Be quiet in body, mind and spirit. Don't hurry either in speaking or responding and be distrustful of your own urgency.
Silence is not the absence of sound but the beginning of listening.
ST. PATRICK'S LORICA:
In the Irish monastic tradition, a lorica is a prayer recited for protection. It is essentially a 'protection prayer' in which the petitioner invokes all the power of God as a safeguard against evil in its many forms.
HERMIT RULE 5: Don't rush about. Stop and be still. Open and close doors carefully when passing through them. Step by step you will discover silence.
St Edward’s Church Stow-on-the-Wold
Now that's a door!
ONWARDS: You've heard of Kintsugi pottery a Japanese practice which mends broken pots with gold. Our journey is the same. We are called to be who we are with all our cracks and imperfections, God’s love/gold will mend our brokenness into something far more beautiful than it was.
Why did God make dogs so loyal?
I guess he understood humans would experience suffering and broken bonds, that our lives would get complicated and messy and knew we would need someone to love us unconditionally and always welcome them home. Thank God Noah took them on board!
MORNING PRAYER
Breathe in the love of God
Breathe out & share it with the world.
Breathe in the peace of God
Breathe out & share it with the world.
Breathe in the life of God
Breathe out & share it with the world.
Breathe in all that is God
Breathe out & share it with the world.
Don’t let the word “mystic” scare you off. It simply means a movement from a belief or belonging system to actual inner experience.
All spiritual traditions agree that such a movement is possible & desirable. In fact, Jesus seems to say that divine union is the whole point!
EVERY CREATURE IS A BOOK ABOUT GOD.
Richard Rohr explains,
“Without any apology, lightweight theology, or fear of heresy, I can appropriately say that my black Labrador Venus was also Christ for me."
God of night and day, as the sun sets and the darkness fills the sky, I ask for your grace to remember that no matter how dark my day was or how fearful I am of tomorrow, You will always bring light into my life and this world. Lord, open my eyes to many ways you bless me.
THE HERMITAGE WITHIN: “The world has forgotten the joys of silence, the peace of solitude which is necessary for the fullness of human living. Not all are called to be hermits, but all need enough silence to enable the deep inner voice to be heard at least occasionally” (Merton)
WE HAVE THIS DAY ONLY ONCE
Jesus, The Christ, we have this day only once; before it is gone, help us to do all the good we can, so that it is not wasted. Amen.
Early dawn - Bodmin Moor, Cornwall.
NIGHT PRAYER:
We weave a silence upon our lips, into our minds and deep within our hearts. Calm us O Lord as you stilled the storm, Still us O Lord and keep us from harm. Let all tumult within us cease. Tonight Lord, enfold us in your love and your peace. Amen.
Goodnight all...
SILENCE & SOLITUDE:
God is in both the noise and the silence. (Just because we become silent does not mean there is no noise around us.) When we become silent we get ourselves out of the way & open to God. Silence is where we fall in love with God & make time for God to love us.
CLEARING:
Do not try to serve
the whole world
or do anything grandiose.
Instead, create
a clearing
in the dense forest
of your life
and wait there
patiently,
until the song
that is yours alone to sing
falls into your open cupped hands...
(Martha Postlethwaite)
“Not all men (or women!) are called to be hermits, but all need enough silence and solitude in their lives to enable the deep inner voice of their own true self to be heard at least occasionally..." — Thomas Merton.
NIGHT BLESSING:
May the beauty of this world and the Love that created it be expressed through our lives and be a blessing to others… this night and always.
PONDER:
You come home,
make some tea, sit down in your armchair,
and all around there's silence.
Everyone decides for themselves
whether that's loneliness
or freedom.
I watched Schindler's List last night for the first time since it was first screened in 1993 when I and four other brothers went to see it on the big screen. We drove back to the friary in stunned silence. Today scenes from Ukraine again leave me silent... there are no words!
MORNING PRAYER:
Lord of the Morning, Help me to remember that being alone does not mean that I am lonely. Sometimes, it is in these moments of quiet that I can hear your voice the clearest. Help me to embrace the stillness and find solace in your loving presence.
HIDDEN SERVICE: In recognition of those whose
prayer and ministry is humbly hidden from sight.

SENDING LOVE & PRAYERS from the Hermitage to all our followers on this special night, especially to brothers and sisters living across the pond battling the snows. Pax et Bonum. ❄️🙏🙏🙏❄️
ALEPPO is a shadow of its former self and remains in ruins from Syrian army shelling and Russian bombing... and now this earthquake. A centre of Arab poetry... We remember the Aleppo Boy (Where is he now?) and pray for all affected by war and natural disaster. God sustain them.
PRAYING FOR HEALING:
Loving God I pray that you comfort me in my suffering, lend skill to the hands of my healers, and bless the means used for my care. Give me confidence in the power of your grace, that when I am afraid I may put my trust in you, Jesus, The Christ. Amen.
