As well as deciding on Mayor Rahman's proposed 5% increase in Council Tax tomorrow's Full Council will finally give cllrs a chance to discuss the Govt's intention to give its 'Envoys' the power to control the use of public money, senior staff appointments + the award of contracts

The Labour Government has boosted funding for Tower Hamlets, but the Mayor still wants a 5% Council Tax hike. Our budget amendment proves it’s a political choice, not a necessity. Cut the waste. Protect residents. Invest in communities. Full details:

Labour will table a budget amendment to freeze council tax, cut waste in Mayor's office, invest in high streets and freeze rents.

The numbers don’t lie. Projected £39m increase in government funding next year & rising to £64m by '28/29 Mayor Rahman’s almost 5% Council Tax hike is unnecessary and unfair. @TH_Labour will be standing up for residents' pockets on Wednesday at our budget meeting.
The key table for next week's Budget Full Council is this one showing grant from the @UKLabour Govt isn't just £39 milion higher in '26/27 but will increase by at least £64 million more by '28/29. In this context @TH_Labour cllrs will oppose Mayor Rahman's 5% Council Tax increase

Our colleagues at @IslingtonLabour have shown already that it is possible and prudent to have an ethical investment strategy https://t.co/qhWSm0ueuN

Aspire voted against our amendment. However, we backed their substantive motion as a first step, but a first step will not enough. The London CIV must now be compelled to publish holdings, tighten screens, and deliver real divestment.

Staff also deserve transparency. People have a right to know where their money is invested and to demand that it meets clear ethical standards and international law, not hidden behind vague assurances.

Our amendment said divestment must go beyond “arms” alone and include companies implicated in serious human rights abuses and climate destruction. Pension funds should not bankroll destruction.

In January 2025, Tower Hamlets Labour group tabled an amendment to an administration motion calling for ethical divestment and explicitly named the London CIV because that’s where investment decisions are made across London borough pension funds.

Ethical investment is basic test: workers’ retirement savings should not profit from war, unlawful displacement, collective punishment, or mass civilian harm.

This applies globally. We do not want pension contributions funding the machinery of atrocity in Sudan, the DRC, or the invasion of Ukraine, whether through weapons, surveillance systems, or enabling logistics and finance.

That means divesting from companies that enable the State of Israel’s illegal occupation of the State of Palestine, including arms manufacturers, military suppliers, surveillance and targeting tech, and firms sustaining the infrastructure of control.

This means that local government and its associated pension funds, must take action to ensure that members’ funds are not being used to fund these breaches of international humanitarian law.

We also recognise what many credible human rights organisations and legal experts have warned about the war in Gaza: That there is an ongoing genocide and grave breaches of international humanitarian law.

Our residents and council staff should not see their retirement savings tied up in companies profiting from war, occupation, and human suffering.

Three years ago today, I announced free school meals for every child in state primary schools across the capital. Over 100 million meals have now been delivered - improving health, wellbeing and educational outcomes, while saving families up to £500 per child each year ❤️
