When SB13 created LSLACs it required all committee meetings be recorded & placed online. This means in the next week or so, we’ll all get to listen to what we can only assume was a captivating discussion as to why boy unicorns shouldn’t have eyelashes. We’ll keep you posted!/6

This is what “parents rights” looks like in Texas: one mother decides what 8,292 students don’t get access to read all b/c she thinks boy unicorns shouldn’t be pink or have eyelashes. *side note: he isn’t pink🦄. And to TX legislators: your absurd laws are harming our kids./5

The book was challenged on 9/3/25 & removed from all district libraries as is required by law. The LSLAC met on 10/30 & voted to permanently remove the book from all district libraries. This Monday 11/17, the school board will vote on whether to accept their recommendation. /4

The complaint is lengthy but here’s our favorite line: “Throughout the story, the main character, a pink unicorn with eyelashes and other traditionally feminine features, is consistently referred to as a boy.” This mom is asking for the book to be removed from the library./3

SB 13 created Local School Library Advisory Councils (LSLAC) which gives a group of politically appointed parents (librarians not allowed) the power to hear & vote on all book challenges in a school district. On 9/3/25 a mom in @Carrollisd challenged Pretty Perfect Kitty Corn⬇️/2

We have the newest casualty of the “parents rights,” movement in Southlake, Texas. And we can thank @AngelaPaxtonTX’s parental rights school library bill (SB 13) for keeping Texas kids safe from Pretty Perfect Kitty Corn in @CarrolIsd! /1

Texas Book Festival was soul-satisfying. So great talking to so many people who care about literature and value the free expression of ideas. @txfreedomread

Congratulations to all of the communities who voted to reject book banning hysteria and to restore common sense, civility, and pro-public ed decision making to their Texas school boards last night. 💙📚🗳️

Tonight’s Texas school board election results continue to prove parents of public school students love our schools, hate book bans, and want leaders who will support educators and employees who serve our communities.

Turns out knowingly passing sloppy, unconstitutional laws that you will inevitably have to defend in court is the opposite of fiscally conservative.
New: Lawyers for Texas bookstores & national book publishers argue the state owes them nearly $2 million for their work on the case against HB 900/the READER Act. Texas' education agency quickly appealed the trial court's recent order blocking the law. TBD on next steps. #txlege

AI in library and book world results in some crazy 💩 😱 Hallucinations of sexual content that doesn’t exist. 👀 Declaring books like To Kill a Mockingbird illegal. 🤯 Producing titles for books that don’t exist. https://t.co/R0DSi61leW

If school librarians lose the ability to curate collections that appeal to ALL readers- especially the most reluctant ones- our kids will lose opportunities to learn and to fall in love with reading. Visit https://t.co/Z18NHt6J9l to learn more and find out how you can help.

Parents, in partnership with our own children, librarians and teachers- not politicians- are best suited to make decisions about what books are and are not “appropriate” for each reader.

The school board majority in Seguin ISD voted to proceed with purchase, while the request remains on hold in La Grange ISD. These objections speak to the concerns advocates for the freedom to read have been warning about for years.

This is the second objection to this book we have seen since school boards have begun micromanaging library purchase requests in accordance with Senate Bill 13- the first being in La Grange ISD earlier this month.

Tuesday night a Seguin ISD trustee objected to the purchase of Butt or Face: Volume 3 by Kari Lavelle for elementary school libraries.

When the bar for “inappropriate” falls to animal butts, we have really lost the plot.

Reminder that the same people who say “It’s not a book ban, you can still get the books at the public library or bookstore” are ALSO trying to get the books banned from public libraries and bookstores.

The Victoria Public Library removed a large number of books from a list provided by the VPBC following the organization’s request.
