very bluntly, these are not good or competent people and all they ever do is try to anonymously shift blame for their own failures. they are going to keep doing this until they stop getting offered the chance to give "off the record" statements.

i think it's bad practice for a news outlet like Axios to keep giving these people space but i think it's outstandingly pathetic if you are a Biden aide who needs a shield of anonymity to stand up for your own decisions, who is willing to dish out but never face consequences
