Luther was neurotic, and misunderstood what Paul was writing about. The problem isn't with Paul but with Luther. When Paul mentions 'works' he is referring to the Mosaic Law, not acts of charity and love. Luther and Calvin got it all wrong, as have their followers for 500 years.
Protestants re-discovering the place the Gospels have in Christian thinking and theology but as per usual, shoot themselves in the foot because they have no guard rails. They go too far in one direction.
Very few read the Church Fathers. Very few understand St. Paul but alsoβ¦
I started speaking about Paul's opposition to Christ for a decade now. I have received hatred but, people are starting to see and understand. This pastor is coming to terms with this fact. It's good to hear.

You might want to check out the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification; Lutherans and Catholics agree on this issue.
Luther and Calvin disagreed on the content of the Law (see for example, βHow Christians Should Regard Mosesβ) Calvin follows the Catholic position.

There are commonalities among all Christian communities. A joint declaration is not written to highlight the differences, though, just those commonly-held beliefs; such is how dialog and ecumenism works. An important difference is the mode of salvation. Protestants believe inβ¦
