On October 3, 1863, President Lincoln issued a proclamation designating “the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving.” Lincoln’s announcement marked the culmination of a multi-decade campaign by Sarah Josepha Hale to make Thanksgiving into a national holiday.

A 7-year-study of 70,000 elderly people from 19 towns in Japan has found that the more public library books there are in a town, the fewer residents need long-term nursing care.

Saw Black Sabbath in Indianapolis about six or seven years ago. Incredible show. Ozzy really held his own. Only one song (“After Forever”) was a bit off but it was all still amazing. Rival Sons opened and were also great. Good memories.

There’s something special about watching the Derby in horse country. Watched the race in a restaurant in Versailles, KY. Guy next to us went wild the whole race. Yelling, stomping his foot. Turns out he worked for the winning horse’s owner or trainer for 12 years. He went nuts.

Veterans of the Civil War are often depicted as having reconciled in reunions in the late nineteenth century. Grainy images often show grizzled veterans shaking hands, symbolically pulling the nation back together. Yet how accurate is this portrayal? https://t.co/NfsdZqJQFb

Last year while in Cincy, I found this Black Brigade of Cincinnati marker. After CSA forces in KY threatened Cincinnati in 1862, black men in the city were rounded up and forced to build fortifications on both sides of the river. Many of them later served in USCT units. #CivilWar

The Bodley-Bullock House (built circa 1814) sure is a beauty! During the Civil War, it served as the Union HQ for Gen. Gillmore and Gen. Burbridge. It was also the Confederate HQ for Gen. Kirby Smith following his victory at the Battle of Richmond, KY. #KYHistory #CivilWar
