We were sticking leaves from outside, exploring colourful rice pudding and making β€˜cupcakes’ out of foam and glitter. We create a low pressure environment, which is safe to explore, with the main aim being modelling and demonstrating sensory play techniques for home 🏠

But our most important tip - have fun! We do this to make food normal for kids. Even if they don't eat anything, that's OK. Don't pressure them into eating anything, just let them explore and enjoy playing with food in their own way.

And finally some quick ideas: Writing your names in food Stacking biscuits into towers you can knock over Make faces with food on paper plates Crunchy food in bags (biscuits, crisps, dry spaghetti etc.) can be great sensory toys Mr Potato head - with real potatoes!

Cheerios, onion rings, mini pretzels and monster munch all have holes in the middle, which makes them perfect for creating jewellery. Show them off with a β€œfood fashion show”!

If your child isn't ready for full contact with wet food, food like Jelly, custard, cooked rice and spaghetti etc. can be sealed in zip/seal bags. Your child can touch and play with them without getting wet

Food art - Dips and sauces like ketchup, mayonnaise and hummus make great "food paint". You can do this as fingerpainting, or try using carrot sticks, bread sticks or celery as paintbrushes! You and your child can create masterpieces together and even make a "food art gallery"

Use mashed potato like play-dough! Mash is great because it can hold its shape really well. That means you can use it to make shapes - try making "mash men" - like snowmen but with mashed potatoes!

Food play is a great way of helping kids who are nervous with food. Food stops being something they only see at dinner and becomes fun - they can explore it at their own pace. So put down a blanket you don't mind getting messy, and try some of our favourite food play activities

July is Picnic Month, and what better way to celebrate than with some messy food play picnics? Food play is all about introducing kids to new food smells, tastes and textures through play - and it's a lot of fun! 🧡on how to have a great messy picnic πŸ‘‡
