Built in 1936 for $29K. One of the only parquet floors in the state. It is still kept in pristine condition. Home of the Springfield Trojans till 1982.

The Aberdeen Civic Arena. What a facility and how about all the fantastic games that have been played there. Northern vs Huron College, Roncalli vs Central, any ESD game, plus a lot of Region championships. The joint was beyond full.

I wonder if there has ever been a SD HS athlete who went to State tournaments in four different sports in one year? Seems DeSmet senior Kalen Garry did just that this year. Football, Basketball, Track, & Golf.
Another one of the best basketball events that no longer exists would be the Freeman Classic. The SF Arena would draw 7000 plus some big-time basketball action. Here are box scores from the 1981 event. SD was rich with hoop talent during this period.
Yes, the B's in Aberdeen are great, but us older folks will continue to tell you it could not top the B's in the Sioux Falls Arena prior to going 3 classes. Agree to disagree is the best way to go. Here is the 1964 championship crowd.
One time gym of the Brandt Bulldogs. Word is the scoreboard still works which doesn't surprise me. A young Robin Anderson got her "start" here.

The Freeman Classic at the Sioux Falls Arena in late 70's-early 80's was the King of the Classics. Nothing topped that event except the state tourneys. Here are boxes from 1981. 7300 attended the evening session for Clark/Armour & Beresford/DeSmet

There is no longer a gym in Olivet, but fortunate to have photos to share.

Dimensions were like 40 x 70, so definitely a "crackerbox". DWU MBB practiced there from time to time under Gordon Fosness I was told.
Privately owned gym in Mina. Coach Chuck Welke always used to send me updates when new things were happening there if he was in the area. We lost Coach too soon.

The iconic Scherr Howe Arena in Mobridge! I loved playing at this place. The murals on the wall were commissioned by renowned artist Oscar Howe and contributed to the unique atmosphere of the venue. This place is a true South Dakota treasure!

Played a few junior high games in this place. Imagine those glory years (early 1960's) of Sisseton HS fans filling this place up. That had to be something.
As a young elementary student in your hometown attending games, who was someone from that school you looked up to as an athlete from those days? Thought this might be fun.
Had to wait for Doug &/or Steve with the news and then Dave with the weather before finding out the scores like Bridge over Troubled Waters 64-62 from the great Jim Burt!

Summit has one of the newer gymnasiums in the state I believe. Their old one is something very special too. Great shot from the stage where the locals sat often. Photo Creds:

The oldest sports program I own. A 1929 District 1 tournament program. Interesting the early nicknames and different team colors vs today. The Peever Golden Tornadoes stands out.

Langford Area needs to bring these uniforms back. Oh yeah, that's Frank Cutler splitting some Webster Bearcat defenders (Mark Eikanger & Tom Burns) in District 3 action. Also, a headless David Hammer

1979 State B GBB Championship game Jefferson vs Clear Lake. If South Dakota had a 30 for 30 story like ESPN, this championship game would be a wonderful story to share. 5000 people were in the Watertown Arena for the epic showdown. Maybe the greatest SD GBB game ever.
First it was home of the Hayti Redbirds & later the Hamlin Chargers. Gotta figure standing room only on most game evenings. Many many great games played here.

Rare Brian Shanks photo in a Lake Preston Divers uniform, a DeSmet Bulldog great player/coach Marv McCune block attempt. An Argus Leader game of the week! LP lost 4 games in 72 (3 to the Bulldogs). The Diver mascot was certainly unique. Will miss it.
A couple of SD Basketball giants.
The Huron unis were slick as legend Terry Dupris shows.
I recall Coach Bob Wachs leading NSC golf teams as well as being a great basketball coach.

I hope Emery did something nice for the 50 year anniversary of the coveted State B title. They came in a little under the radar & knocked 3 excellent teams to win it.
5 Class B all-state teams from 1981. These are pretty loaded squads & might have been the toughest year when the sportswriters had to select. Several did not make the team from that year either.
I hope somebody out there is keeping history of the Corn Belt League. There are a lot of interesting things about it. Here is a season preview from 1987.
Kinda wondering if Coach Deckert and Coach Pierson are getting together shortly for the Brandon Valley/Mitchell AA championship game. Maybe Coach Munsen will tag along. Thinking of these guys today.
Today happens to be Jim Thorpe's Birthday (Born in 1887) Some various facility photos from Pine Ridge including a banner with JT on. Home of the Thorpes
