As Himalayas are seeing an increased climate change induced calamities, I argue that the traditional local institution can be an innovative way to mitigate these new challenges.

“In the mountain, stillness surges up to explore its own height; in the lake, movement stands still to contemplate its own depth.” -Tagore Through the lens of Capt. Sumit Bhatnagar, an ex-pilot with the Indian Navy, comes this surreal vision of Gurudongmar Lake in Sikkim.

The emergence of strong economies and regional power within the Global South has raised new issues of ‘marginalisation’ and domination among states already marginalised by the Global North. ⁦@DoctorDev⁩ aptly sums up such nuances of China’s position.

In my new article for @frontline_india @the_hindu I contextualise hydropower development and the floods in Sikkim and northern West Bengal against the pervasive rhetoric of "development", and where that has gotten us #sikkim #teestaflood #himalaya https://t.co/zLXO37ABFw

An important note stressed by the @hisheylachungpa, MP, Rajya Sabha on how early restoration of the NH damaged by the GLOF is of utmost importance to the national security of India.

Finally the weather allows the heavy vertical lift capability of the IAF to begin operations. This is critical for areas in North Sikkim that have been cut off after the Teesta III dam at Chungthang Sikkim collapsed. 🙏

Finally for the first time after the disaster occurred , helicopter service started from Pakyong to Lachung along with relief Materials and if weather permits to evacuate tourists. They will also do aerial survey of affected areas of Lachen and Chungthang. #Sikkim

Why this is also very critical & could be much more disastrous is the amount of such GLOF-prone lakes in North Sikkim (also Bhutan). South Lhonak Lake is one example. All of them get funneled through a single exit: i.e, Teesta River.

Predicted GLOF event ( https://t.co/odnFRjqiPY) resulted in contraction of the south lhonak glacial lake from an avg area of 165 ha to 60 ha. Loss of lives & properties, destruction of a 1200 MW dam & main road to a semi-active border front later, what are the lessons learnt?

The pattern of development model followed in the Himalyas needs to be revisted. The security and state interest driven model needs to be substituted to environment and people friendly.

Terrible footages coming out of #Sikkim of the 1200 MW #ChungthangDam being breached. Precisely why many have warned about the #Himalayan zone not being suitable for big dams & heavy #infrastructure. But a certain model of 'development' burries such cautions, putting all at risk!
