1) A thread on Cutting Through Spin.
@LeoVaradkar
contacted
@HSELive
re the death of a teenager in Limerick hospital. Leo calls for inquiry & as a doctor, cautions us against jumping to conclusions about a death of a young girl left on trolley in an overcrowded, Emergency Dept.
I followed
@AuschwitzMuseum
for years and shared their excellent posts on the suffering and genocide of Jewish people. I unfollowed when they endorsed and supported Israeli terrorism and genocide in Gaza. Never again means never again for everyone.

One month after Sarah Everard's tragic murder & online judgement of her choice to walk alone. Jennie Poole was savagely murdered in her own home by her partner, in the presence of her four year old son. Women's locations don't kill them - perpetrators do.
99% of children in Dublin 4 go onto third level, vs just 28% of children in Dublin 8, yet the Govt invests significantly more in D4 secondary schools than it does in D8. This State sponsored structural inequality oppresses disadvantaged communities.
A reminder that Conor McGregor tripled the rent of his local barber this year forcing the 70 year family run business to close. Let's see what rent this man of the people who cares so much about housing problems, charges in his new build to rent properties.. Actions not words..
Disgusted with
@LeoVaradkar
. A scan of the South African dossier provides ample evidence of genocide. I'll do a longer thread on the things Leo can't see but this is a measure of the man. Silent in the face of a genocide.
1. As a social worker, I met
@LeoVardakar
then Minister for Health. I explained the reasons Irish individuals /families I worked with were becoming homeless (rapidly rising rents). His only response was to comment that he heard families were entering homelessness to get houses.
1) As racist comments are made following the horrific attack on women & children in
#ParnellSquare
, a shout out to the many people in our police, emergency & health services who are from other countries & cultures who helped today & help everyday to keep us all safe & well.
1) No doubt a tough & emotive piece for
@JoeBrolly1993
to write. I'm concerned by his view that it is harmful for children when women share their stories of domestic violence in a public sphere, as a/c Brolly 'there is no protecting them now.'
1) I have no knowledge of the Rory Gallagher or his family life but some dangerous narratives are emerging around domestic violence, the role of social work, the police and the courts which should be challenged.
1) Shout out to the primary schools with tracksuit only uniform policies. We need much more of this & far less of little kids dressing like uncomfortable little adults in stiff shirts & scratchy trousers!
1) Reflections on hospital visiting. A year ago, a consultant told me she feared hospital visiting will never return to normal post Covid as it suits system to regulate it tightly. Hospitals are now used to providing care with less family involvement. Some prefer it, she said.
I was once asked to brief
@LeoVaradkar
about patients who were homeless (living in awful circumstances, with very poor health). He responded & told me he had been advised that many people were using homeless services to get permanant housing. Thatcher in a suit.
A Must read
@GeneKerrigan
this morning
There’s a casual assumption today that something went terribly wrong with the provision of housing for our people —
Nothing went wrong. This was and is policy, from Enda Kenny to the current Varadkar/Martin set-up
7) We need strong media & political analysis to cut through spin. Deaths in Limerick were & are predicted, frontline staff have gone above & beyond to highlight the risks. Calls for inquiries from Government when people die after so many red flags were ignored is unacceptable .
6)
@LeoVaradkar
cites his medical degree when it suits him. Today as a doctor, he warns us not to jump to conclusions, ignoring the fact that over 70 of his medical colleagues in Limerick have been writing and forewarning about preventable deaths.
The children of Gaza are not Hamas but they will be murdered in revenge for Hamas actions. The West condemns the Hamas actions but will defend Israel's right to do the EXACT same thing in Gaza. The West will raise flags for Israeli victims & ignore dying Palestinian children.
1. No need to wonder why Govt rejected Citizens Assembly wording - they don't believe it is the legal responsibility of State to provide care. Leo is SO privileged to say he can provide care, home & education to his family members - that is his yardstick for care.
Leo Varadkar on the Six O' Clock Show.
He talks about the importance of care within the family and the state should strive to support that
Leo saying the quiet part outloud.
He goes on to say he personally doesn't believe it's the State's responsibility but the families'
1) Reading lots of comments re people who come to Ireland, live off benefits & never work etc. Just for context, I and many other social workers have worked with many Irish in other countries who emigrated, had lifelong difficulties & relied on state support/turned to crime.
2) This implies that public knowledge/discussion of domestic violence is more harmful to children than the harm of secrecy around it. This is a culture which protects perpetrators, which implies there is/ should be shame & fear when we talk about what happens behind closed doors.
Michael Martin speaking about the need for men to listen to women. 35 Govt roles were appointed when he became Taoiseach - women only appointed in 9 roles. How exactly is he listening, when men dominate his cabinet & key decision making roles?

@AllisonPearson
Look outside 10 Downing Street tonight, Allison. Some of those marchers you so disapprove of, are the frontline of the NHS. They do A LOT more for your 'wonderful' country than most of the people who condemn them & yet you insist on othering them.
I didn't initially support the expulsion of the Israeli Ambassador, believing diplomacy is essential. I was wrong.A message is needed to isolate Israel as a rogue state AND send a message to our partners in the EU who are cheerleading this.

An incompetent, hubristic, patronizing shambles from this Government.
#Referendum24
set disabled people, carers and women against each other, caused immense hurt to vulnerable communities, whipped up transphobia and anti-immigrant sentiment, and handed a win to the far-right.
Tom Clonan has been an ethical, informed, lone political voice in explaining to wider public why a No vote to care ref was so essential. We are so lucky to have him in the Senate. Every social worker needs to hear his family experience of social work.
@IASW_IRL
2) I don't recall a direct intervention from
@LeoVaradkar
in June 2022, when
@HIQA
issued a damning & frightening assessment of the safety of care in the Emergency Dept of University Hospital Limerick.
Our annual health budget is 20.7 billion. I've plenty of time to wonder how they spend it, as my 4 year old admitted with appendicitis, spends his 16th hour (& counting) on a plastic chair in a hospital waiting room, while dedicated staff work in impossible conditions.
1) Our 11 & 9 year old are just out of school, named their friends absent with Covid & it turns out that entirely unprompted, they & some classmates decided to ask for & wear a mask in school today as they want to avoid Covid. We have ignored the opinions & wishes of kids.
A campaign led by people with disabilities & their allies successfully rejected a paternalistic care referendum. Their voices, ignored by Leinster House & NGOs is now an organised & powerful movement. Politicians & NGOs now need to be humble, listen & learn.
#Referendum2024
1) It is so disturbing to read in the Sunday Independent today that an older woman in a nursing home in 2008 told her family she was being sexually assaulted by the perpetrator in the Emily case. Family reported this to a nursing manager & were promised follow up - none came.
3) No calls for an inquiry either in July 2022 when fourteen hospital consultants wrote to hospital management expressing grave concerns about the safety of care in the Emergency Dept in University Hospital Limerick.
6) Domestic violence (DV) happens to kids, not just their mothers. It destroys family life. The harm is caused by DV, not by speaking out on it. Brolly suggests speaking out increases harm - a terrible message to thousands of women & kids living in homes with DV on this island.
Thinking of the 48 young people who went out for a night in Dublin in 1981 and never came home. And thinking of the survivors, on this most important day of inquest verdicts. This image taken this morning at Memorial Park.

Ashamed to be represented by Irish leaders who can't review ample evidence compiled for them by other countries who care about innocent life. Shame on

South Africa’s case against Israel for ‘genocidal acts’ in Gaza begin hearings next week at the International Court of Justice.
I urge all political leaders, nation states and International Community to publicly support and demand an immediate ceasefire.
Here’s why -my latest👇🏾
3) This was the same culture which promoted secrecy & silence around suicide & childhood sexual abuse in Ireland. Domestic violence is the final taboo. A hidden, private family matter. Shameful. Yet, survivors of childhood domestic violence regularly speak of the harm of secrecy.
9) This is one of the reasons why women stay. Leaving a relationship with children means that despite known violence, the perpetrator will in most cases,continue to have access to and at times, full custody of the children. Leaving is often less safe for mothers than staying.
7) Nicola simply shared her story, with support from family & witnesses. Mothers can share their stories of domestic violence in a public sphere, safe in the knowledge that harm to children is experienced through growing up in a home with domestic violence, not discussion on it.
4) One month ago,
@RichardODonoghu
told the Dáil that a further SEVENTY doctors wrote to hospital management warning of the risk to the lives of patients in their care. Doctors highlighted multiple examples of near misses in which patients almost died.
@LeoVaradkar
responded.
1. As a social worker there are two Irelands. Those who see the devastating impact of Leo's ideology, on health, disability, child homelessness and privatisation of social care and those who think there are times to be silent on it.
Opposition let themselves down this week with attacks on Leo Varadkar.
It was one of those times politics should have been set aside but Labour, SF, the Soc Dems,and PBP could barely articulate a proper farewell to the departing Taoiseach.
My column 👇
Anyone who followed Saoirse's story knows that if love alone could have cured her, she would have been healed a hundred times over. Thinking of her heartbroken family and all families living with childhood cancer today.
@AllisonPearson
Ah Allison, she who condemns some war crimes while defending others. You don't represent Britain or the fabulous British people I know, including British Muslims AND Jews who believe hospitals in Gaza shouldn't be bombed, as per Downing St protest tonight. Goodness will win out.
Three doctors on shift for 191 patients in Emergency Department of the major trauma centre for the region. This level of understaffing and overcrowding is quite literally killing patients.
If a child wandered from a creche and was killed in a road traffic accident, there would be a national outcry. Surprised at the lack of media interrogation around the care needs of this nursing home resident, killed after wandering from his nursing home.
A reminder that
@DubCityCouncil
plan to spend 193.5 million on homeless services in 2022 most of which goes to voluntary services & private landlords. Huge budgets for years - yet no money in the pot for restoring their OWN housing stock since 2009! Homeless policy in action..
8) In the meantime, please don't use a decision not to prosecute or a custody decision as a reason to decide a woman is lying about domestic violence. I have known many women, beaten to a pulp, who lost custody of their kids and never saw their cases get to court.
5) Gaining custody of the kids in NO way means that a man has not perpetrated violence against a woman. I can think of multiple cases where a man explained away, minimised, denied or admitted violence to police, courts and social workers and still got custody of his children.
1) As a social worker, I strongly disagree with this position from
@irishredcross
which is not informed by best child protection practice. Absence of previous complaints does NOT equate to absence of risk.
The problem is not that people are attending EDs inappropriately. The problem is over 900 people have attended appropriately, now require hospital admission but cannot access a bed & are at higher risk of poorer outcomes as a result.
5) Just an antidote to the myths out there that all Irish emigrants went and built the rest of the world while the rest of the world comes here to exploit us. We Irish are as human and as complex as everyone else. And many of us have needed assistance from other countries.
I once briefed
@LeoVaradkar
who was Minister of Health on homeless patients. I gave examples of where people had no choice but to enter homelessness. His response? 'I've heard some families are using homelessness to access housing quicker.' Migrants haven't caused homelessness!
Homeless figures have surpassed 13,000.
Latest figures from the Department of Housing show a total of 13,179 people were homeless in October including 3,991 children.
@rtenews
5) In response
@LeoVaradkar
reminded the Dáil of the rights of hospital managers and told
@RichardODonoghu
to bring concerns to
@HIQA
. No call for an inquiry from him then, a month before Aoife's death.
4) Northern Ireland holds the joint highest rate of female homicide due to domestic violence in Europe, 1 in 6 women in relationships report domestic violence (DV) in the South. Kids have Stay Safe programmes re sexual abuse, where is the support to help them speak up about DV?
1) A social worker's response to 'Granny dumping', a term used to describe behaviour of a family who take a clinically well person to hospital and refuse to take them home. With minimal assessment, the family are usually labelled as Granny Dumpers in ED & it sticks for admission.
Climate change feeling very local. My farmer husband is cutting wheat with record low levels of moisture (11%) today. He has never seen this before. Also feeding cattle silage for last two months due to drought.
#notjustaheatwave
1) Well
@LeoVaradkar
you represent politics for people without empathy or respect, when you use an offensive term about the many people in our families & communities with learning needs. Please challenge this language
@AnneRabbitte
@davidcullinane
Please share with any contacts in Pharma/Food industries etc. Frontline staff in St James's Hospital are urgently seeking protective clothing to allow them treat patients safely.
#COVID19
#Covid19ireland
1) Every time I read someone quote 'personal responsibility' for rising Covid rates, I despair at how individualistic society has become for some of us. Not everyone has the same resources & abilities to exert the same level of 'personal responsibility. '
2. This is classic punching down. Leo was talking about Irish families. He was listening to a narrative where 'our own' were just looking for free handouts. Owen Keegan, then CEO of Dublin County Council was peddling same narrative on media.
8. If you want schools, GPs, healthcare services, disability services, amenities etc, lobby & make your local politicians pay for not delivering them. Make your concerns political. Our communities are reaping what failing Govt policies have sown. Punch up.
I don't want a few euro more a month. I want a health system without sick people on trolleys, a housing system without child and family homelessness, I want functioning disability, mental health & education services. I want to live in a society, not an economy!
#keepyourtaxcut
I don't want a few euro more a month. I want hospital waiting times slashed, more investment in mental health services, carers properly taken care of, better investment in education and our environment, and for local authorities to be able to build housing again.
3. It becomes easy not to care about people if you frame them as greedy/feckless. Of note, Fine Gael built record low levels of social housing in history of State. In 2015, as homelessness started skyrocketing, 75 social houses were built nationally. 75.
Bruna Fonseca, the first woman to be murdered by a man in Ireland in 2023. It feels never ending, the beating, stabbing, strangling, the ending of women at the hands of men.
Had my son in The Rotunda today. Can't speak highly enough of the quality & kindness of nursing care I & others have received. Spent the day watching nurses going above and beyond in an exceptionally busy and under resourced environment. This is their everyday.
#WeStandWithNurses
7) Perpetrators are so skilled at grooming professionals.I have heard gardai & social workers use the exact language of the perpetrator to describe the woman 'troubled, unfit, incapable.' Professionals need much more support & training to manage perpetrator behaviour & influence.
If every single asylum seeker left Ireland in the morning. There would still be appalling disability services in Mayo as the State has repeatedly shown itself as uninterested and incapable of delivering them! Still this woman blames.. asylum seekers...
Dear Focking God
Woman on
@TheHardShoulder
saying she heard on the radio that there’s no autism services in Mayo yet we’re taking in all these asylum seekers
THEY ARE DIFFERENT EFFIN BUDGETS KAREN
A carer in her 70s, caring for her 90 year old husband & two sons with intellectual disabilities is unable toaccess three hours of home help or timely care planning. This is our health service in action..
Genuine question - what long term future does Ireland have in a European Union with such a different moral compass to us? How can a union where some members see and are traumatised by genocide, while others blatantly back it, function or exist?
Commission takes robust steps following the allegations against UNRWA. No business as usual.
- Decision on upcoming funding in light of the investigations’ outcome. No funding foreseen until the end of February.

2) I was an Emergency Dept social worker for many years. I routinely worked with women who experienced brutal levels of violence. Many had addiction issues which developed as a coping strategy to survive the relentless emotional and physical abuse.
Heartbroken to see little kids the size of my own facing such violent hatred. This Has to be a red line, intimidatory protests have to be made illegal. The State MUST respond swiftly and seriously. Those poor poor little kids.
#Roscrea
.
Hard to believe what this country has become. The Government has a lot to answer for.
These children don't deserve to face this today. Shameful day in Roscrea.
#RefugeeCrisis
8) Risk management is risk balancing. We cannot accept such a dramatic change to our family support in illness model. Hospitals must learn from international experiences to respect and support family visiting post Covid. Patients deserve nothing less.
3) Mothers feared leaving their relationship as the perpetrator told them they would lose their kids. Their fears were valid. I provided medical evidence of assault in many cases & children were still placed with the perpetrator at the point of separation.
4. So having decided to not build social housing, having decided to instead allow Irish families languish in hotel rooms, known to be so harmful to children, Fine Gael led Govts also let rents sky rocket, forcing more & more people into a profit making homelessness industry.
1) A video taken by an Emergency Dept doctor in Connolly Hospital showed dozens of maggots wriggling & falling from a large deep wound in Ultan Meehan's head. Ultan was a man with dementia, referred to hospital by his nursing home.
3) I was at the funeral of someone this week who received a terminal diagnosis alone, who was only able to wave at her heartbroken family from the third floor hospital ward. The story of suffering told at the funeral was not of illness, but of the suffering of separation.
7. This is a Govt's dream: they aren't to blame for services, services don't function as we 'are full!'. If all migrants left , we would have same woeful systems & we would be back to punching down on 'our own.' I remember protests & objections against hostels for Irish people..
4) This is not evidenced based practice. We know that human connection with those we love supports emotional and physical well being. Family connection now deemed a luxury add on in many settings. The caregiver & illness support provided by families is not valued.
Earlier this week, I watched men in balaclavas protesting outside a Minsters home, for months, I have watched protestors harass asylum seekers. Speaking the truth to a representative of a country arming a genocide is apparently a step too far for Irish authorities.
I was thrown out with excessive force from Nancy Pelosi's honorary doctorate of law
@ucddublin
earlier today for representing the views of students as
@UCDSU
President. Why does UCD continue to platform Zionist warmongers whilst silencing students?
5) Many in & outside of the GAA community will be asked to comment. I feel for them but saying 'I don't know what to think, I need to listen & learn' & suggesting domestic violence experts are best placed to comment & write on this would be a good place to start.
Absolutely brilliant journalism, from
@lindseyhilsum
, giving a forensic account of the aid massacre and the wider context in which it occurred, while humanising the Palestinians, a rare feat on other news channels.
4) It was essentially a trade-off led by social workers with limited education in coercive control and the impact on kids. Kids were essentially deemed safer with father who abused their mother than with their mother who had addiction.
1) As per
@rtenews
, Tusla is investigating allegations of abuse of children by a school principal following concerns by raised by staff. Yet parents advise when they raise similar concerns about abuse, Tusla have told them they have no remit in allegations against teachers.
5. There was NO interest from Govt in addressing housing crisis. Just as they failed to address large classroom sizes, hospital overcrowding, frontline community services such as disability, mental health or GP services. We don't protest on those issues & they get away scot free.
Grace case not even referenced
@morningireland
headlines this morning,despite the harrowing debate in Dail yesterday & delay in costly report. Hard not to despair at the lack of media drive to seek political accountability for failing State services. Airport noise made the cut!
This is also a huge win against a culture which creates jobs for its own. Any loss here occurred because Trinity &
@roinnslainte
failed to abide by fair, transparent recruitment processes..
Provost of Trinity College Dublin, Dr Linda Doyle, said in a statement on Saturday: “This is a huge loss for Ireland’s education sector, and for all the students who would have learned so much from Dr Holohan’s experience”
This is clearly not true. Britains largest & infamous homeless hostel Arlington House in London catered for up to 1000 Irish men. No local protests against helping 1000 Irish men, many of whom had addictions. Those men also left their families behind..
Little Baby Sila died alone, an in her final hours she called out repeatedly for comfort from her mother. Israel, the US, the UK - they have lost all humanity. Any shred of it. Hina, Imad, Sila - absolute innocents being shot and burned and slaughtered.
#Genocide_of_Palestinians
5) It feels despite all the talk about person centred practice, we have returned to a classic 1950s medical model of healthcare, treating the disease not the person. Now it needs a social worker or a senior nurse to 'negotiate' family access if extra visits needed.
6. Now a section of Irish society has adopted Leo's punching down tactic. Rather than punching up, and tell Govt to deliver outcomes, rather than constantly telling us how much they have spent on policies that didn't deliver, these people are punching down & blaming new arrivals.
Heartbroken to read this from an organisation I've respected over the years. Now unfollowed. Better than most,
@AuschwitzMuseum
know the horror of genocide, yet is unable to care about one inflicted on another innocent population. 'Never again' really meant 'Never again for us.'
RESOLUTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL AUSCHWITZ COUNCIL ON THE TRAGIC EVENTS IN ISRAEL, APPROVED BY CIRCULATION ON 18 NOVEMBER 2023

6) As our knowledge of the serious impact of domestic violence on children who witness it improves, this may change. For now, perpetrators can continue to groom professionals to exert as much control as they can over family life.
2) This week, a nurse I also admire told me that despite volume of complaints received by her hospital, visiting would & should never return to time 'when families could visit & park themselves by the bed for hours.' Yet evidence shows this support is good for patients!
1) Heartbreaking & avoidable.Until the public care enough to punish political parties for their failure to address the health service crisis, we will continue to see the deaths of people we love.
2) In 2000, I remember that 25% of the homeless in London were Irish. For years, London's Arlington House, once the biggest homeless hostel in Europe, used to house the most Irish men in any one building outside Ireland.
