“Now it can be said week”…if you are a scientist who has not wanted to say out loud that it is ok if masks are optional in school one day (even if you aren’t sure when that is), it’s ok to say it now. Then we can at least have the respectful discussion.

calls for end of mandatory masking in schools post-Omicron, citing

and recent writing on limited mask efficacy + costs to kids.
Making this the indisputable “Now It Can Be Said” week.

Let's not forget the effect on teachers. I teach at the community college level, & I will testify that not being able to know what anyone looks like or share everyday empathy and warmth through facial expressions takes the joy, heart, & soul out of teaching.
@ShiraDoronMD
Contrary to steretotype, it looks as if some "blue" cities & states are leading the way on this (SF is relaxing their mandates, & I think Boston may not be too far behind). It's a little too early for us in IL, but this is encouraging moving forward.
@ShiraDoronMD
If you are a scientist who didn't speak out over the fallacy of cloth masks working maybe you ain't a real scientist. I'm sorry but my patience has worn thin with the uni degree elitists. Tradies have known the bs from day one. I studied chemistry and am a qualified carpenter.
@ShiraDoronMD
Most of us have been screaming this for 2 years. I asked a nurse friend why she wouldn’t say it publicly and she said she’d lose her job. I get it, at the same time people need to reflect on their cowardice during the time of Covid.
@ShiraDoronMD
I do not know anyone that disagrees with this and know a lot of pediatricians and scientists.
Sadly, this week has put us behind in achieving this goal bc some scientist voices have made arguments that have failed peer review. This does not help in making a plan for no masks.
@ShiraDoronMD
Personally, I wish the cognitive psychiatrists & other scientists who know well how essential facial expressions are to human communication, sense of identity, & emotional bonding (even in everyday interactions) would begin to speak up. It astounds me that this essential. . .

@VPrasadMDMPH
Did anyone do any RCT on the psychological effects of masking on kids? Just asking. Seems like “experts” say it’s damaging. Just wondering what the evidence is for this.
@ShiraDoronMD
Respectfully the main point is ONE DAY. And guess what with a less than ideal vaccination rate in 1/3 of American communities I can say today is not the day.
Maybe, IF and THEN, you could discuss it as in context.
For now this messaging is dangerous and harmful.
Do better.

New study appearing in JAMA Network: Researchers found that school and childcare programs that used masks had markedly fewer closures related to Covid-19 than those that did not, even after controlling for other variables.
