Authors of the “positio” (dossier) on Newman as Doctor of the Church, w/ Cardinal Nichols (Westminster) after reception at Urbiana after Mass. (I got to meet the great Eamon Duffy and talk about the English Cisalpines, actually the topic of his dissertation under Owen Chadwick)

Many thanks to Andrei Orlov for editing. Rest in peace, Fr. Joe. The Detroit Lions hadn't won their division since 1993, Fr. Joe passes and now they're two for two winning the NFC North... santo subito? (4/4)

There are a number of chapters that I look forward to reading: many Jesuit scholars, my old classmate Eric DeMeuse on Augustine and unjust excommunications, Ellen Scully on Cyril of Alexandria and Adam-Christ, and Michael Cover on Philo, Paul, and Ptolemy. (3/4)

I really enjoyed the introduction, a tribute to Fr. Joe by Stephen Beall (Marquette, classics prof). I contributed a chapter on Vatican II and early modern liturgical reform, based on some of the work I did with Fr. Joe and Ulrich Lehner during my PhD at Marquette. (2/4)

When I returned from Rome I was delighted to see that this book had arrived: a festschrift for my friend and mentor Fr. Joe Mueller SJ, who passed away far too young a couple years ago. (1/4) #CatholicTwitter

Really enjoyed this convo on Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), philosopher/heretic, equal parts brilliant & cantankerous. @JamesACarleton was an exceptional host again. I spoke alongside two authorities in the field: Ingrid Rowland (ND) & Dilwyn Know (UCL). https://t.co/XXIvx8l8Ps

https://t.co/Lin1GQH0n6 Good stuff from @JLLiedl The topic isn’t just academic...what’s at stake in the Newman debates [is] the way the faithful — bishops...to seminarians who will one day lead parishes to the laity in the pews — understand the nature of Church teaching itself.

Different camps are taking the English convert’s teaching on doctrinal development in different directions, with big implications for contested issues.

Reflection I wrote on Newman as Doctor of the Church. "Newman correctly sensed that the intellectual climate of the modern world...was profoundly different from the past, even the recent past, and consequently required a new & creative form of fidelity." https://t.co/YfKHUd6OuI

“Heroic sanctity” is the hallmark of the saint, while “eminent doctrine” is the additional contribution of the doctor (teacher). The doctor has things to teach the Church.
