On this Juneteenth, we take time to remember the horrors of slavery in the United States, its continued impact on the socioeconomic status of millions of Black Americans, celebrate freedom, and recommit ourselves to reckoning and dismantling systemic racism.

On June 19th, 1865 - over 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation - Union Army troops marched to Galveston, Texas, to free the last enslaved Black Americans in Texas. This day of emancipation and freedom would come to be known as Juneteenth.

Today we take time to honor and remember the brave service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We owe them and their families the utmost gratitude and respect.

Starting next week, the Oregon Senate Committee on Housing and Development will host a series of informational hearings regarding housing production, homeownership, houselessness, and other related topics.

As we observe the Juneteenth state holiday today, it also happens to be #WorldRefugeeDay — a time to honor refugees around the globe. It is significant for several communities that this year we celebrate both of these holidays on the same day.

On June 20 and 21, people will join together to celebrate World Refugee Day — which was first held globally in 2001 – to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, Oregon State Senator Kayse Jama (D-Portland) said.
